LEWISTON — A 33-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly threw a severed pig's head into a Lewiston mosque while a group of Muslim men were praying.
The frozen pig's head was rolled into the Lewiston Auburn Islamic Center on Lisbon Street about 10:15 p.m. Monday, witnesses told the Sun Journal of Lewiston.
About 40 men were bowed down as part of their prayer ritual when the incident occurred. They got up and ran outside but were unable to locate anyone. None of the men was hit by the animal head.
Brent Matthews of Lewiston went to the police department Tuesday, told a detective he had thrown the head and was charged with desecration of a place of worship, a misdemeanor.
The charge is considered a hate-bias crime, so Matthews' case will be referred to the Attorney General's Office for further investigation, Lt. Don Mailhot said.
Pigs are considered unclean by Muslims, who are barred from eating pork, and the act was viewed as a deliberate insult upon the religion.
Lewiston police bagged the head as evidence and took it to the police station, witnesses said. Police Lt. Mark Watson said the head was then disposed of.
Matthews, who was out on bail, "admitted to doing it," Mailhot said. "He thought it was funny; it was going to be a big joke. The police department doesn't take anything like that lightly."

It is. However my Grandmother raised chickens, both for eating and for eggs. I don't recall seeing any in the kitchen, before she pulled their heads off that is. Her method of beheading them involved galoshes and a convenient flat rock out in the farmyard, near the steps leading up to the house. She'd place the chicken's head on the rock, with her galosh clad foot on top of the head. Then she'd just pull on the rest of the chicken. Very effective and faster than it sounds.
I have a very graphic picture in my head of the old phrase "running around like a chicken with it's head off". Boy do I. :) Best chicken we ever ate though. When she moved off the farm (we purchased our chickens from her, already "dressed" and frozen) we had to go to "store bought", and they were terrible.
Grandma did free range chickens before it became "in".

I wonder if Maine has laws against desecrating a flag on private property (I mean burning someone ELSE's flag). This happened several times in recent years here in Houston (at least one was a military flag).
It is vandalism, no doubt, and indefensible. But desecration is a hate crime charge.
How many antiChristians who defaced churches on 06/06/2006 were charged with "desecration" over simple vandalism?
You are correct - not every Muslim wants to kill us - THEMSELVES with their own hands - but far more than admit it at least tacitly approve of the murder of "infidels" by terrorists.
Your comparison to Christianity and the Bible is just wrong. The Bible is clearly something to be taken in context - including the context of the Old Testament being supplanted by the New Testament. We are to learn the lessons taught in the OT through the lense of the NT. And yes, we are suppose to "tow the line" given to us in the Bible. My Bible doesn't tell me to murder "infidels". It tells me to deal with unbelievers with Love that they may also learn of said love.
