MEXICO CITY
Ruling party candidate Felipe Calderon built an insurmountable lead in Mexico's presidential vote count Thursday, but his leftist rival vowed to challenge the results in court.
With 99.56 percent of the vote counted, Felipe Calderon would win even if all the remaining votes went to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party. He had 35.82 percent of the vote, compared with 35.37 percent for Lopez Obrador.
Lopez Obrador supporters wept in the streets, saying they wouldn't let him be robbed of victory.
I'm sure you are right but listening to the PRI complain about corrupt elections is simply laughable. They are the all time champs.
"They are the all time champs"
The PRI didn't protest Fox's win as he's one of them but you can bet that there is no way Obrador is going to win since he's a mexican.
Over the years i've known and been around too many high lever spanish in Mexico to believe that they will ever let a mexican have any power without a full blown revolution.
PRI (Partido de Revolution Insititucional) was the ruling party since the Revolution. It has no real ideology except power, bit tends to lean left because it has always bought the vote (so giveaways are very popular).
PAN (Partido Accion Nacional) is Vicente Fox's party. It is a close as a Conservative you will find, but it resembles the Murtha/Pelosi/Dean wing of the Democrats (as opposed to Leiberman).
PRD (Partido de la revoluton Democratica) is the somewhat Lefty Party -- Like their version of the Democrats but more like the Socialist Labor Party.
PT (Partido Trabajo-Workers Party) is flat-out Communist.
They are supposed to gather at 17:00 (5 o'clock?) on Saturday in the Zocalo. It won't end well.
It's historic. My ancestors were in SW Texas when the last one started, and the stories passed down sound to me like the atmosphere is similar.
FReepers would do well to go to the library and check out books about the genesis of the Mexican Revolution, the effects of it along the border states, and the implications that are felt even today (the older editions are better because they're before touchy-feely political correctness)
Sorta exactly like Gregoire in Washington state. Hmmmm, now that I look at them: Obregore/Gregoire/ObreGregoire
She just had her Democrap lackeys count and re-count until they could find [read "manufacture"] enough votes for her to win. Is her similar namesake in Meheeco going to do the same? Gonna have to check and find out who Obregregoire's advisors were down there. Maybe they travelled down to Meheeco from King County to do some consulting since they were so successful there.
Close elections will NEVER be the same.
A wonderful LEGACY for Mr. Global Warming.
Good question.
I think it has to do with culture. Conservatives for the most part don't believe that they are "fated to win". They think they must work to win. When we lose we pull back, regroup, examine what worked and what didn't and get to work again.
Liberals believe that they are fated to win. They believe in that "tide of history" malarkey. They Must Win! Believing that they must win they are unable to deal with losing.
It is also why they cry "cheat!" every time that they lose.
In Mexico they are to the right of Obrador. Here, they are as much on the left as John Kerry. They are "conservative" in some social senses, but they are still in the big-government mold they were in when they had their 70 year political monoppoly.
