MEXICO CITY

Ruling party candidate Felipe Calderon built an insurmountable lead in Mexico's presidential vote count Thursday, but his leftist rival vowed to challenge the results in court.

With 99.56 percent of the vote counted, Felipe Calderon would win even if all the remaining votes went to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party. He had 35.82 percent of the vote, compared with 35.37 percent for Lopez Obrador.

Lopez Obrador supporters wept in the streets, saying they wouldn't let him be robbed of victory.

Wuli,I studied in Mexico City and the PRI is not left wing. A matter of fact the PRI candidate was the first to Say Calderon won even before the Recount. Many in the PRI are conservative and will work with Calderon because they want money and Cabinet posts.

Is Gorebrador going to court on this result?

Good one! FWII, he said if the election results aren't "fair" (read: he wins) then he will "send his people into the streets."

I suspect it will be a small number of very loud people who "take to the streets."

Everyone is so busy looking at the Presidential election, no one is paying attention to the REAL story. The PRI was WIPED OUT in the Mexican Congress. It will all be PANtistas, with a smaller % of PRD/PT and a very small number if PRItistas.

That is pretty good news all things considered.

Calderon will now be able to use Mexico's best export, Oil Reserves to strengthen Mexico's economy. If Al Obrador would have stolen the election he would have used the Chavez model of using oil profits to gain a international platform of Marxist ideology.

About an hour ago, a story on eluniversal.com.mx reported that the PRI came out today saying "We're not dead."

I agree Free. I am elated that Hugo Chavez was embarrassed once again and by every coming day has become a waning dictator. Hopefully LuLu in Brazil will lose in the fall. History shows that oil prices will decline in cycle, like they always do. When that happens Chavez will be just another Castro Wannabee with a starving population and all the arms you can eat.

Right. These Venezuelan observers families are probably under house arrest in Caracas by Chavez goons, unless they say the Mexican elections are rigged. Chavez is a fat pig and a wannabe Castro who has suffered 3 major defeats in the last 6 months(Peru, Columbia, Mexico) and his peg boy from Bolivia, Morales, was unable to get a solid Parliamentary majority on Sunday and will not be a able to push his commie peasant policies either.

"Is Gorebrador going to court on this result?"

He's too busy writing the screen play for his movie "La verdad inconviente".

"The obvious explanation, namely that the candidate simply didn't get as many votes as his opponent, doesn't seem to make it to their radar screens."

In Mexico it's he who counts the votes that wins, PAN is counting the votes!

There hasn't been an election in Mexico in 80 years that wasn't corrupt.

1.PAN is Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderon's ruling party that is supposed to be Conservative. Power base is the North and West of Mexico.

2. PRI was the party until 2000 ruled Mexico for 80 years and is more to the center and very elitist and very corrupt.

3.PRD is AL Obrador's party and pro Marxist- leftist. The Peasant party and whose power base is Mexico city and Southern Mexico.

Somebody needs to say it: having an outright commie come that close to taking over the government of Mexico is no cause for any of us to celebrate. Mexico needs to be fixed. Nobody prospers by trying to dodge bullets forever.

I agree with all of that, and add that a free and prosperous Mexico would be good for these United States, for a wide variety of reasons.

Lest we become smug, though, don't forget that in November, 2000 a majority of Americans who bothered to vote, voted for a communist.
