Mexican Elections: Recount favoring AMLO (barf alert)

Oh, what a difference a day -- and a recount -- makes. Mexican and international press is reporting that the official recount has put PRD candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the lead over opponent Felipe Calderón, who had just a day ago seemed to be the victor in this race, full of all the twists and turns of a telenovela.

According to Spain's El País, reporting a little over an hour ago:

The recount of the 42.79% of the votes from the Mexican presidential elections of last Sunday yields a 2.62% lead to leftist candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, according to an announcement by the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE). IFE sources have also clarified that while this would put López Obrador at 37,00% and conservative Felipe Calderón at 34,38%, it is still not possible to confirm definite trends.

my dad used to tell me before we'd go play golf.."son, I don't have to have the fewest strokes to beat you, just the sharpest pencil"

translation: it's who's COUNTING that will win, not who actually won..

I may be a bit twisted on this, but communists tend to build walls to keep people IN their country. That would help us a great deal. Also, a socialist is very unfriendly to business which would also be good for us. I know if I owned a manufacturing company, I wouldn't move to Mexico if a socialist government was in control. I would stay in the US, where a semi-socialist government is in control haha.

Socialists and whack jobs would build alliances with communists and dictators elsewhere that are our enemies and that is NOT A WIN FOR US!

I guess you are too young or ignorant to remember the Mariel Boatlift or the Vietnamese boat people.

Also, a socialist is very unfriendly to business which would also be good for us. I know if I owned a manufacturing company, I wouldn't move to Mexico if a socialist government was in control.

Google "China"...

In the long run KoRn, I have to disagree. We already have a half socialist country to the north of us, but they at least can keep it together. We don't need another to the south of us especially with Hugo Chavez and Castro as his buddies.

The south is pro Obredor, the north is pro Calderon. If IFE is counting the southern states first, then Obregon will be in the lead. If they are counting the northern states and AMLO has a lead, then the election is over.

Good points both. Half my brain was being irrational, and the other half was joking.

"The recount of the 42.79%" Not even half the votes counted. Reminds me of Susan Estrich on election day.

"Early exit polls show....."

The Left might be setting itself up for more post election depression, and planting seeds for the usual election fraud, stolen election yada yada.

Looks like the gap is closing after 81% counted

81.36% in, according to El Norte:

Obrador 36.63%
Calderon 34.69%

THIS IS NOT A RECOUNT... THIS IS THE COUNT. The original figures were what's called PREP -- which is a statistical sampling... if the model is correct, and if there is a significant difference between the candidates, THEN the statistical winner can assume they've won. In an election this close, the difference was within the margin of error, and the Elections Commission does not make any statements about the probable winner until they've finished the count they are now doing. IF there are still problems -- THEN there is a recount.

There's nothing unusual about this, though it's only been done in lower ballot elections before.

Alas poor Mexico... always reported in American papers by people who assume the U.S. and Mexico do things the same way :-)
