PORCUPINE, S.D. - The first woman elected to lead the Oglala Sioux tribe was removed from office with five months remaining in her first term.
Cecelia Fire Thunder, former president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, met the anti-abortion movement and lost. At a hearing on June 29, Tribal Councilman Will Peters, architect of the complaints against her, said at the outset that abortion was the issue.
''We are here today because of the abortion. We will plan for and fight for all Lakota, including the unborn,'' Peters said.
Fire Thunder opened the floodgates of criticism when she suggested opening a women's health clinic on the reservation in response to the state of South Dakota's near-complete ban on abortion.
Asked if abortion was the real reason for her impeachment, she said ''I don't know what's motivating them. For a lot of them, they have personal stuff against me. They were not paying attention,'' Fire Thunder said.
She said the decision violated the constitution and that she would challenge the decision.

"met the anti-abortion movement and lost."
Rather, she met her people, and lost.
God bless the Oglala Sioux for not giving this horrific holocaust any place amongst them, and for showing this woman the door for her suggestion that they should.
If I were an Indian, watching my people slowly disappear, I would be pretty p'd off about attempts to put an abortuary on my reservation.
Way to go pro-life Sioux. Now maybe you might also have corruption-free elections in '06 and '08.
Absolutely!
God Bless the Oglala Sioux for booting this woman who would kill her own people for profit.
Catholic Ping.
exactly.. liberalism doesn't have a place in Indian country.. Indians are very much in connection with nature.
Abortionists/leftists are full of such tricks.
dittos Jeff
Actually, the Democrats have the same dilemma. The more their supporters abort, the fewer offspring their supporters have, the more difficult it is to find receptive audiences for their wacky ideas. They're reaping what they've sown. The dumbing down of their supporters allows them all to miss the obvious consequences of being against having progeny.
Seems as if Ms. Fire Thunder got short-circuited and rained out as Chief of the Sioux. They figured out she was shockingly all wet! Good for them.
Yep, and in a state of denial she's now accusing them of not paying attention.
She claims that "ideas" aren't punishable, but she didn't just put forth an idea, she solicited donations to build the clinic.
She also didn't present her ideas to the council before doing so.
Over two-thirds of the council felt she deserved to be impeached. They didn't simply disagree with her. They didn't simply want to convince her to change her course of action. Over two-thirds felt that she needed to be removed from office.
That's a very harsh denouncement of her actions.
She can play her legal games, but there doesn't seem to be any chance she's be able to build this "clinic" or that she'd win reelection.
Other than some whining about how unfair it all is, her political career appears to be over.
Every time a Liberal fails at the polls, it is never "Gee, maybe what I think is radically out of line with a majority of the voters, and I should consider what they want." It is always "we failed to get our message across, we didn't spend enough to get the answers to the people, we need to do a better job of communicating with the voters." Boy, for every Lib I have heard who's peeved that Bush is "arrogant", there is nobody more arrogant that a Liberal. Clearly, if they have lost the Senate, House, Presidency, most Governerships, and chunks of the Supreme Court, it's just that we morons in Flyover Country are too dumb to understand how wonderful and right they are!
(And Bush's swagger is that of a man convinced, iron-clad, that he is right...that's what really drives them mad. He doesn't see the world in a million shades of gray that have to be examined, evaluated, and moaned over. It's called confidence in one's beliefs, and it drives them crazy!)
