Four hospitals in Puerto Rico will begin implanting a Florida made microchip the size of a rice grain in patients who suffer from illnesses that cause memory loss, like Alzheimer's disease, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The hospitals will start using the microchip, made by the Delray Beach, Fla.-based Verichip Corp., in August, according to El Nuevo Dia. It is inserted in the forearm, costs $200 and is voluntary.
"It is a way to offer an additional service because the chip it going to be used on a population that has memory problems ... or great health problems," said Nelson Martinez, coordinator of operations for Hostos Medical Services.
VeriChip is the only company with U.S. federal approval to implant such chips in people. The company has implanted more than 2,500 people worldwide with chips that give hospitals access to their identification, which is used to retrieve medical information from an Internet database.
In February, a Cincinnati surveillance equipment company became the first U.S. business to allow employees who voluntarily got chip implants to use them to enter secure rooms. Some employees in the Mexico attorney general's office have also been implanted with chips for this use.
I'd like an implant that can help me find my damned keys and/or sunglasses.
Just fuse the keys to your hand and sunglasses to your head. Problem solved. : )
It'll be the kids first. For the children. Required to have a chip to enter public schools.
I read a SF novel that I liked alot a while back, in which you could get a socket implanted behind your ear that would take a "personality chip". You could buy different personalities like J-Lo, or James Bond. The major problem is that, rather like when you are drunk, you FEEL as cool as James Bond, and affect some of his characteristics, but the people around you think, "Jeez, it's one of those miserable morons with no life who have to play at being James Bond to feel OK about themselves." Cool idea, tho.
Amazing how we go from voluntary to Big Brother in some people's eyes.

It could become a condition of employment. Or probation (say it sets off an alarm if you attempt to enter a bar or other term prohibited location that can be regulated).
I think this is a great idea for Alzheimer's patients, many of them tend to wander off. I had to tag all my dad's clothes with a lable containing his last name (he knew his first name), address and phone number.
How about a 'random' personality? You would have no idea what you were going to get. That would be fun. Of course, maybe you get Charles Manson one day and you end up with a life sentence.
Schizophrenia by choice? Sounds like an alternative lifestyle.
But if you were not in your right mind, you could claim "insanity" and by our courts not be held accountable for your actions.
Truly.
The state of Wisconsin has already taken steps to prevent such a thing.
Wisconsin Governor Signs 'Chip Implant' Bill
Then again...
Alternate plan. Tattoo a unique identifying number on a person (voluntarily of course) and look it up the database.
Cool.
"It's official: In Wisconsin, it is illegal for anyoneincluding employers or government agenciesto implant RFID microchips into people without their consent."
You have to consent to a drug test too. Failure to submit a urine sample can result in termination.
You wouldn't HAVE to get the surgery but your "choice" may mean finding work someplace else. And as a condition of parole, you can infringe on the rights of citizens in all kinds of ways (whether you should be able to or not).
Not only will it restore your memory, it will teach you how to play shuffleboard.
How long will it be before we are all tracked like salmon via these chips implanted under skin or in clothing, EZ Pass chips for tollways, GPS devices, cellphones, or other proximity devices? All you need is a certain number of machines that will detect your presence in the area, add a timestamp, and report it to a central computer.
What makes you think you aren't being tracked now?
Nice tie, by the way. Did you get that as a gift? Central has no record of its purchase. : )
LOL.
The tricky thing about tracking the salmon is darting them from a helicopter. Jim Fowler where are you when we need you...
