We Need Fewer Secrets

By Jimmy Carter Monday, July 3, 2006; A21

The U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) turns 40 tomorrow, the day we celebrate our independence. But this anniversary will not be a day of celebration for the right to information in our country. Our government leaders have become increasingly obsessed with secrecy. Obstructionist policies and deficient practices have ensured that many important public documents and official actions remain hidden from our view.

The events in our nation today -- war, civil rights violations, spiraling energy costs, campaign finance and lobbyist scandals -- dictate the growing need and citizens' desire for access to public documents. A poll conducted last year found that 70 percent of Americans are either somewhat or very concerned about government secrecy. This is understandable when the U.S. government uses at least 50 designations to restrict unclassified information and created 81 percent more "secrets" in 2005 than in 2000, according to the watchdog coalition OpenTheGovernment.org.

Oh FGS! Will someone tell this senile old traitor that we are at war now? (Actually we were at war during the 90s but the pervert-in-charge didn't notice) So yes, Jimmy there are secrets. And guess what else? YOU are not important enough to know them and pigs will fly before you are giving clearance.

"spiraling energy costs"? Is this idiot serious? Has he forgotten the TRIPPLING of oil prices in 1973 accompanied by very long gas lines under his disastrous regime? We haven't even talked of the super high inflation, very high mortgage rates and very high unemployment under the regime of the worst president in American history, Jimmy Carter.

...short memories, eh?

Honestly, what is the peanut man on?

D-E-M-E-N-T-I-A is beginning to set in. Hard to say when it started, though.

I've been saying all along that it's a GOOD thing the President isn't jumping on the "Toss the NYT folks in jail right away" bandwagon, and this is one of the reasons why--the American public is seeing just what the Dems really think of our security. And 9-11/WOT/security is still THE issue that's going to determine this election--all other issues are second to this.

The Dummies can't help themselves; they had an oppportunity to seize the Congress this year and they're blowing it.

What a great, unifying and patriotic message for this 4th of July, President Carter!

I thought about that, too...not a good message for the 4th.

It wasn't a REGIME. He was the POTUS then, not some dictator. He was for certain one of the worst Presidents we've ever had, but the "Regime" word is NOT for the USA, no matter how you may despise any elected official.

Carter may very well have forgotten the disasters in his wake as POTUS. He's never been all there. The question to ask is.... "How many USA citizens/voters/taxpayers remember"? Most of those who think him a hero weren't even born yet.

"Like your secret plan to undercut the Shah... and betray him. Thanks to you...the world is much more dangerous place and people on both sides will die... "

Do you hear that Jimmah?

Oh how I lust in my heart for you to finally shut up!

I know some folks would love nothing better than to have Jimmah shut up and go away. I, on the other hand, want him out there being as foolish as he can be. It makes ALL Democrats look like idiots,!

Not too many.

"Most of those who think him a hero weren't even born yet."

True.
Saw a deluded young fella once at the airport with a "Bring Back Jimmy Carter" T-shirt

It was too much for me.
I was like :"Which one you want back? Very high mortgage rates, very high unemployment or high inflation, or just all of them?"

WOW - I hadn't considered that - take it from one born in the early 40's and voted for him (yes - head hangs in shame) ... he seemed like a breath of fresh air?

He is the reason for the mess (middle east) we find ourselves in now.

Stick to growing peanuts Mr. Carter - or building houses - but kindly GTFOOOW and that goes for you Att. Gen. Ramsey Clark as well.

B

*snort* I'm sure the kid was clueless. Well, that actually goes without saying simply because of the fact that he was wearing the t-shirt.

We Need Fewer Secrets

Let's start with Kerry's complete military records, Bill Clinton's medical records, the records on why Bill Clinton left Oxford, Bill, Hill. and Al's fund raising records, complete donor records for the Carter Center and the Clinton LieBury, new autopsies on Ron Brown and Vince Foster, Howard Dean's sealed gubernatorial records, home addresses and security system details for all the staff at the NY Times and a list of all their sources. Oh, and I'd like to ask Harold Ickes what his dad knew about Pearl Harbor and when he knew it. I'm sure other Freepers can add lots more to the list, but I think this makes a reasonable start.
