PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: After an eventful week capped by their visit to Graceland, the President and First Lady spend a quiet Saturday at Camp David. They returned to the White House earlier today.
During her press preview last Thursday of the Official Dinner for the Japanese Prime Minister, Mrs. Bush had some interesting and fun things to say. Here's an excerpt. Go here to read the entire transcript.
Q Mrs. Bush, could talk about the decision to have a state dinner tonight? This has become rare in this administration.MRS. BUSH: Well, I wouldn't say it's really rare. We've hosted nine or 10 state leaders at Camp David. We've hosted at least 10 state leaders, including Prime Minister Koizumi, at the ranch. Those have been opportunities to get to know world leaders in a more relaxed and private setting, especially at the ranch, where it's our own home and they can see what our life is like. We have had a number of state dinners, but this one is not actually a state dinner, because the head of state, of course, would be the Emperor of Japan. But this is an official dinner, just like a state dinner, for a Prime Minister.
And we're thrilled to have the opportunity to host Prime Minister Koizumi. We actually had scheduled a state dinner earlier for him. I don't know if we'd announced it, but we'd scheduled it before he called for the last elections, his last elections.
So anyway, now we're glad to get to have him. And as it turned out, the weather was perfect. We were afraid it would be really too hot for the arrival ceremony in June in Washington, but it was just right.
Q Mrs. Bush, could you talk a little bit about the jukebox that the President presented to the Prime Minister, and his reaction?
MRS. BUSH: Well, we have -- we found a really great jukebox from the '50s -- refurbished, obviously, and filled with 45 songs, including 25 of Elvis Presley's. So it was in the Red Room when we came in from the arrival ceremony this morning. And Prime Minister Koizumi searched the keys and found, "I want you, need you, and love you," and played that first. (Laughter.) So he and the President sang a duet. (Laughter.)
Its quite sultry in Ashford as well, so we are either in for a thunder storm or a heatwave, hope it is the rain.
It is neat that they share a b-day . . . wonder what Laura is going to get the Pres. for his b-day? Wonder what I'm going to get mr.h for his b-day? :-)
My birthday is the sixth too. I'll be eighty.
Congratulations - are you doing anything special?
It is dry in your part of the world too, isn't it? It's getting to be the really hot time of summer here. The fair is the week after next and the last two years have been pretty nice. I hope we're not in for a really steamy one.
Happy b-day early! YOu don't look NEARLY that old--LOL! What are you going to do to celebrate?
Wolfstar -- I'm so glad you shared what you learned on other websites with the Dose and with me. It's been a learning experience and I don't look at posters, especially those who are are constantly negative and condemn the president, with the same naivety.
No, nothing special.
The motorcade of Vice President Dick Cheney takes a lap around the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Fla., Saturday, July 1, 2006, as the Vice President arrived to attend the 2006 Pepsi 400 NASCAR race.
Well I am sure the dose will be special being the President's 60th - I will not be posting it though it is Thursday Gretchen is doing it and I am doing Wednesday instead.
So come and join us.
No, I don't look that old. I just took a look in the mirror to see if I am getting grey hair and only see a small wisp of grey. Beard is mostly white though.
Wow 40...60...80...Awesome!
Happy Birthday, a bit early to you too!
:)
Any pictures of the vice president at Kennedy Space Center? I am a space buff so that's more interesting to me. ;) I read he and Mrs Cheney and their granddaughters got to see space shuttle Atlantis in its hangar. That must have been a great consolation prize after the Discovery launch was called off.
You know that age is a state of mind! My grandfather is 84 and he looks, and sounds, about 60. Just talked to him on the phone; he is thrilled about moving this week. He's lived in WI all his life and now he and my mom and dad are moving to Missouri. What a change!
Why aren't they moving to Nebraska? Nebraska is a great place to live.
***I am sure you are right it would be interesting to analysis their posts.
I am sure some analyzing software would reveal similarities that are too much of a coincidence to be different people.***
I think you're right. People usually have a distinct sytle of expressing themselves. There might also be a telltale misspelled word, or a unique way of punctuating.
Thanks to both of you for bringing this to our attention.
We might be able to "out" some trolls if we watch for the clues.
Benecke has undergone 36 rounds of chemotherapy in a four-year battle against bone cancer and could not attend a White House ceremony Monday with other Presidential Scholars, so Bush presented the award to him personally.
Prayers for this young man and his family
They were on yesterday's dose but I have also uploaded them to The Phythonic Cow's server that we can use to store photos.
Here is a link to it.

Dad says there isn't enough good fishing in Nebraska. They've never lived in Missouri, don't know anyone there, they did their research on the internet and decided they wanted to live there. They went down in early May and looked around (they'd been in contact with a real-estate agent) and bought 14 acres with a house for mom and dad, and a house for grandpa, about 200 feet away. They're five minutes from the boat ramp of a big lake.
They lived in NE for many years and dad always hated the wind.
They'll still be closer; about 7 hrs. instead of 12. I think it's neat that they're moving so far, to live where they want to and be able to do what they want to.
