A 5-month-old baby died in a minivan Wednesday after the mother apparently forgot to drop the child off at day care.

The tragedy was discovered about 5:30 p.m. outside the Wonder Years 2 day care. The baby's mother stopped at the day care after work to pick up the child and was told by staff that the baby had not been dropped off. She realized then that the baby had been in her minivan all day.

"The mother had forgotten to drop off the child at day care in the morning," said Curt Kreun, owner of Wonder Years 2. "She actually came in the building to pick up the child and then realized what had happened."

The child was in a car seat in the back of the vehicle, according to Sgt. Jeff Burgess of the Grand Forks Police Department. A Wonder Years 2 staff member made the 911 call, according to Kreun.

It's amazing you can concentrate enough to post, over all that loud violin music. :) Buh-bye.

"The Man's FAULT!"

No, but there are many, many reasons why parents have to work.

I agree that it is best for one parent to be at home, but I can't stand the mothers-who-work-shouldn't-breed attitude so many here express.

Again , how can you make a mistake like that ? It's beyond my comprehension how someone can FORGET they have a kid in the car ..I can't imagine , as hard as I try , that anyone can be THAT stupid.I'm not saying she did it on purpose but someone that stupid is dangerous . Bet she didnt forget her purse though .

"That said, the death of her child is the result of choice she made." No -- it was the result of an unwitting mistake. "It's my hope that other women might learn from her mistakes," fair enough "that her life might serve as a warning to what could happen if, for example, you put career over family." You are making a presumption that she put career "over" family. You don't know her circumstances. Had she forgetten the baby in the car in the midst of a grocery shopping trip -- admittedly a stretch -- instead of an excursion to work would it have made any difference? My point is, the woman is probably going through the worst grief imaginable. Why dump on her and accuse her of being greedy or selfish, when all you know about her is that she has a job which requires her child to be in child care for at least one day a week?

I'll TELL you what's amazing: You dump your kid in day care to go to work...then piss away time on FreeRepublic--stealing time both from your child and your employer. Bad girl.

This is getting ridiculous- I am sure the mother is in agony about forgetting to take her baby out of the car. That was a horrible mistake and an investigation should be done in order to determine whether the mother was criminally negligent. But some posters on this boards are making working mothers sound like they might as well be put out cigarettes on their children. Is staying home with your kids, especially infants and toddlers, preferable to daycare? Yes, but that doesn't mean that those children in daycare are bound to be scarred for life.

My mother had to work since my father chose to leave his marriage to be with someone else, and guess what? I survived. I had to be watched by my grandmother and go to aftercare once I was in school, and yet I am not on the corner doing drugs or some other horrible fate. I am very close to my mother to this day. If children were only born to people who could give them the optimal environment, how many of us would be here?

There has always been mothers who have had to work in order to put food on the table for their children. Those mothers should be crucifed when a rare tragedy such as this happens.

Because she, a total stranger, is not living her life exactly the way he thinks all women should; therefore she paid a price that some around here are pretty smug about. Again, not my brand of Christianity.

You're making more than one incorrect assumption in such a brief post, but I'm sure that's par for your course. :)

Actually, he still falls asleep in the car on road trips. Which is fine - I drive faster than he does and I make up time, then. ;)

Soccermom, you're wasting your time with these people who can't comprehend another person's grief, nor even understand that others can make a mistake, even in the most important circumstances.

Frankly, it's these people whom the libs like to point out as the "heartless, cruel" conservatives. And their assessment is correct.

"Again, not my brand of Christianity." Mine either! Careful, the last time I invoked Christianity in protestation of harsh rhetoric I was accused of being liberal! I am a strong advocate of the notion that kids should be at home with their moms. That doesn't mean I would pounce on a tragedy and use it to blast a mother for her circumstances.

I work for a ministry. Not much income. Yet my wife stays at home with our two baby girls. It's not about "affluence" ...it's about standard of living. By her selfish decisions she put herself in a position of killing her baby.

Harsh? Yeah.

Baloney. My husband is an Orthodox rabbi, not much income. I stayed at home with 5 kids and then went back to work full-time while the other 4 came along.

I never left any of my kids to suffocate in a hot car, and the result of Alouette's own personal "daycare" study, there is not significant difference, once grown to adulthood, between the kids sent to daycare and the kids who stayed home with mommy.

There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between leaving your child with alternative caretakers so that you can support the family and LEAVING YOUR CHILD TO SUFFOCATE IN A HOT CAR.

If you can't tell the moral difference, you have no business being in ministry.

"Total stupidity .You get in the car and dont LOOK at the kid first ..You just assume the kid is still there.." NO. It was precisely the opposite! She assumed the baby wasn't still there. She thought she had dropped the child off at the day care center. When she went to pick the child up from day care, she got in the car and saw the back of the car seat. Why would she go and look into the car seat when she had no reason to think the baby was there? "Then agan maybe when you're too busy on the cell phone it's too much trouble to open the dor and check on the kid face to face ." Cell phones in the car a a HUGE pet peeve of mine. I can't stand it when I see people yapping on them without regard for the road. But we have no idea if this mother was doing that. Why make assumptions?

What kind of monster would enroll a 5-month old in day care?

Kiddie kennels welcome dogs— er, I mean children of all ages, even newborns.

Dual-income families (especially the "affluent" ones) often say they're doing what's best for their dogs— er, children. But, one might wonder whether it's really better for the kids to have both part-time parents supporting a huge mortgage and a couple car payments and all the toys money can buy.

Sure, there are valid reasons for day care. But, shirking parental responsibilities isn't one of them. (If that doesn't describe you, don't bother defending yourself; you don't need to.)

"Tragic Accident" Victim Identified

(AP) _ Police have identified a five-month-old girl who died in Grand Forks after she was left in a minivan all day.

Police say 34-year-old Andrea Boe thought she had dropped off her daughter -- Kate -- at the Wonder Years 2 day care center before going to work yesterday morning.

Police Sergeant Jeff Burgess says the mother drove to the day care about 5:30 in the afternoon after leaving work -- and was told she had not dropped the baby off as she had thought.

The owner of the day care center, Curt Kreun, says staff members at the center called for help and tried unsuccessfully to revive the baby.

The high temperature in Grand Forks yesterday was 78 degrees. The National Highway Traffic Safety Commission says temperatures easily can climb to more than 100 degrees within minutes in an enclosed car.

The Grand Forks Police Department crime bureau is investigating -- and an autopsy is being done today. But Kreun says police told him charges are not expected and that it was a ``tragic accident.''

BTW have you noticed there are almost no station wagons on the road? Families have to get minivans or SUV's to anchor all those car seats.

The demise of the full-size station wagon is due in large part to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) laws. Station wagons are considered cars, which are required to get better gas mileage than multipurpose vehicles like SUVs and minivans.
