A 5-month-old baby died in a minivan Wednesday after the mother apparently forgot to drop the child off at day care.

The tragedy was discovered about 5:30 p.m. outside the Wonder Years 2 day care. The baby's mother stopped at the day care after work to pick up the child and was told by staff that the baby had not been dropped off. She realized then that the baby had been in her minivan all day.

"The mother had forgotten to drop off the child at day care in the morning," said Curt Kreun, owner of Wonder Years 2. "She actually came in the building to pick up the child and then realized what had happened."

The child was in a car seat in the back of the vehicle, according to Sgt. Jeff Burgess of the Grand Forks Police Department. A Wonder Years 2 staff member made the 911 call, according to Kreun.

Mothers should buckle their purse to the child's safety seat. No woman gets out the car without their purse. I know a girl who works with me that leaves her work badge attached to the baby seat. She cannot come in the building without it. So many things they can do.

That is a really good idea, thank you. I'm not a parent yet, but have two God kids. I'm going to mention this to my friend when I see her tomorrow.

My my

All this vitriol about MOTHERs being responsible, staying at home vs work, keeping her legs together etc -=

I have yet to see ONE mention or question "Was there a father in the equation?"

I don't see anything in the story that tells us if she were a working mother by choice or necessity? Did I miss it?

It's pretty obvious that her mind was on her job and not her child. Pretty dismal priorities.

What kind of monster would enroll a 5-month old in day care?

How's the view from that pedastal that you're looking down your nose from?

Yes. I agree that it's totally ridiculous to have such a law. It's just another avenue to avoid any kind of personal responsibility. And of course, I'm sure there are many $$$$ in the mix to be had. But hey, what's a child's life when money is an issue. When my children were younger, I would never put the carseat/booster seat that far out of my sight! When will the dumbells wake up and realize it makes one pay more attention to the road, the child, and other idiot drivers! The concept of, out-of-sight/out-of-mind applies here...

I doubt the mother feels "happy" or "fufilled" right now. She must live with this tragic mistake the rest of her life. She will put herself through more hell than any strangers could dish out.

She made a dumb, stupid mistake. One that could have been not been made if she had taken any of hundreds of different actions. But she didn't. She killed her baby. Not maliciously, but that baby is dead just the same.

This mom failed to keep her most precious posession safe and all our talk of "she should have," or "she could have" does nothing but give us false hope that we would never make that same mistake because we would _____________ (fill in the blank with your own sanctimonious reason.)

My heart goes out to her and her family. She will never, ever get over this if she lives to be 100. The anger and disappointment that we collection of strangers feel is multiplied millions of times in her heart.

Should she be prosecuted? go to jail? I'll be dollars to donuts that she won't care either way. Man cannot harm her now, she's already done the worst.

I'm with yellowdoghunter on this one. You just don't "forget" your children ANYWHERE.

Who said I didn't?? You assume too much.

I am saying things here that I would not say to her in person, of course. Of COURSE "there but for the grace of God, go I"

I have immense sympathy for her. Just because you do something stupid and that can cause another's pain or death doesn't mean you meant to. Or that you don't die a little each day for the rest of your life. I've been very stupid in my earlier years and although I didn't kill anyone, I'm sure that was the grace of God.
I'm just discussing one aspect of this tragedy. If my view offends you, please just ignore my posts. :)

I do see the connection, but I was trying to define the difference, and I knew when I wrote that I wasn't doing a good job of it.
Sorry, but anyway, i see your point too.

I apologize. These situations just tear me up. They are just senseless. How can anyone a father or a mother be so self absorbed as to forget about a child that is with them. There have been as many fathers that have been involved in these deaths as mothers, and it is not fair just to single out on gender.

I am not all the way through this thread...but you are the first person to suggest real-life solutions!

I hope someone gets the word out! In fact, I'm going to send your suggestions to the local TV station.

Why didn't the kiddie kennel employees call mom to ask where the baby was that day?

This is one of my biggest points...don't put your kid in a place where they don't call!

Who knows what kind of cr@p could happen these days...kidnapping, parent-napping, left-in-the-car....

If the kid isn't there within a half-hour of the time scheduled...call!

Folks who use a small family day-care will say there's no time for that.

If you are a small, family day-care, what is the answer? Shouldn't you call?

Baby found dead in vehicle. Mother apparently forgot to drop off baby at day care.

Husband's fault. Or some other man. Certainly not hers. Actually, anything with testicles; a cat, cow, bird, anything. Any male mammal will do. Rest assured.......it's not the woman's fault.

Idea - proximity alert. Baby seat with sensors. If baby is in the baby seat, and no adults are in the car - baby seat will start beeping. After a few minutes, the baby seat will then page or send a text message to the parent. Failing that, the baby seat will then interface with the vehicle's alarm system and start blinking the lights and periodically honking the horn.

Or when the car is turned off, if the baby seat is occupied, it will beep immediately. Lots of possibilities for interfacing baby seat sensors and the vehicle for the purpose of alerting the adults.

If somebody can't remember to take care of their own offspring, how do they possibly remember to turn off the iron, or turn off the oven?

Puh-leeze.

you're rushing to work...half asleep...u place your baby in the car seat in the back...you're still half asleep, and the child is asleep...you're in a rush, someone calls your cell, blah blah blah...u forget to go to the day care...baby is still asleep in the back...you're still asleep but in a rush...you get to work, get preoccupied, the day goes by...you think you dropped your child off at day care that morning (because that's routine)...but you didnt...realize it when you get to the daycare, and then find your child dead in the back of the car...stupid, stupid, tradgedy...but not implausible...

You're kidding. Good thing these people remember to turn off their toaster ovens, or else their houses would burn down!

These people certainly have time to answer their damned cell phones; but to ensure they take care of their own infant children?

No way, too busy busy busy.....

She is not a monster for enrolling a 5 month old in day care.

No, just a shitty "mother"

Some people do not have the affluence to take months off of work to care for a small one.

Then why are they having children they can't support? What are they, cats in heat?

Accidents and tragedies happen. Please have a little sympathy for this mother.

The "mother" didn't die horribly, the child did. I have sympathy for the infant that's dead. Contempt is left for the mother.
