WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to overturn a recently enacted law requiring safety trigger locks on all hand guns sold in the United States.
The Republican-controlled House handed a victory to opponents of gun control by a vote of 230-191.
Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, a Colorado Republican, argued that the added cost of the trigger locks is passed on to gun owners and that they "do not stop accidental shootings."
Last fall, President George W. Bush signed legislation giving gun makers broad protections from civil lawsuits, but that law contained the mandatory trigger lock provision.
The amendment overturning the requirement for trigger locks was attached to a larger law enforcement spending bill for next year that has not yet been considered by the Senate.
Small victory for gun rights. Now let's get the Senate on board.
Tell me again how we have to "send them a message" in November because the democrats and republicans are "all the same".
Gun locks didn`t help Cheney`s partner. (just kidding, the guy is a lawyer, who cares)
Excellent question.
It's not a victory unless the Senate approves it UNCHANGED and the President signs it. The Senate is full of anti-gun lefties who would relish an opportunity to amend the hell out of this bill.
Too small, needs more meat, and there are several other pro-gun rights bills that should also be passed.
There are a number of pro-gun bills pending in Congress that require your action. Please review these legislative initiatives and be sure to contact your U.S. Representative at (202) 225-3121, and your U.S. Senators at (202) 224-3121, and urge him or her to cosponsor and support these measures. Additional contact information can be found using the "Write Your Representatives" feature at www.NRAILA.org.
. H.R. 5092-This bill would improve BATFE's process for punishing the few FFLs who violate the law and it would establish guidelines for BATFE investigations. This bill was drafted in large part to address recent BATFE abuses at Richmond, Va.-area gun shows highlighted in hearings before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee's Subcommitee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security.
. H.R. 5005-This measure will codify congressional policies, roll back restrictions, and correct errors in federal firearm laws.
. H.R. 5013/S. 2599-Legislation to prohibit the confiscation of lawfully owned firearms during states of emergency. Would guarantee legal recourse for victims of illegal gun seizures
. H.R. 1384-This bill would remove several antiquated and unnecessary restrictions imposed on interstate firearms business since 1968.
. H.R. 1288/S. 1082-Legislation to repeal the draconian D.C. gun ban and restore the right of lawful District residents to own firearms to defend themselves and their families.
. H.R. 4547/S. 3275-Legislation that would allow any person with a valid carry permit or license issued by a state to carry a concealed firearm in any other state if he or she meets certain criteria. Importantly, the laws of each state governing where concealed firearms may be carried would still apply within its borders.
Missing from this list is H.R. 2088, which I find to be the real test of faith for this congress.
It is disgusting that H.R. 2088 is being kept bottled up in committee, I guess support for our veterans is only lip service.
Congress appears to be incapable of passing a simple bill, only taking action on thousand page + "Omnibus Bills".
So I guess we need to demand that several of these bills be combined and passed as one.
Does this law require a lock at the point of purchase or does it require the owner to have it locked in their home?
The sinate will cave to the anti-gun lobby like a cheap suit.
Yay?
It adds to the cost of purchasing a gun, much like requiring airbags on cars adds to their cost. If one wishes to have a gun lock, then one should be able to decide for one's self.

I missed this - how the heck did the house ever pass this in the first place?
Incrementalism. First step to back door registration then confiscation (one always follows the other) is small things like trigger locks. Next comes internal locks (like the Taurus guns offer now), then so called smart gun technology which eventually would require a retrofit of all firearms....except it won't work to start with. The point is that gunlocks don't deter criminals. You think a bad guy is going to wait around until you've got your lock off so you can shoot him? Most gun locks don't even deter kids. It's just another layer of bureaucratic control of the people by the government.
I'm not familiar with the law, but as far as I knew they just threw in a small cable lock when you bought a gun. Hardly a violation of gun rights, but shouldn't have been mandatory none the less. Eventhough they HAVE to give away the cable locks, there's nothing anyone can do to make people use them.
Screw them. We have the house of reps. And the second amendment, should all else fail.
The law requires you to buy one. You can use it as you wish. Mine are door knockers. Why force someone to buy the dang thing every time you buy a handgun. Most go unused. I know cause there is a liberal out there that will want a law to require you to use it at all times the firearm is not being used. These are termed safe storage. They too do not decrease accidents anything. They only make people think guns are a big buggy man. Then they could go as far as Australia and the police do periodic checks or your home to make dang sure you are using that lock.
It only requires that zarf purchase extra locks and insurance. For the children and womenfolk of course. Heck, if you have nothing to hide might as well request permission to own a firearm. Right? Reasonable people have an armory complete with government control. If it is good enough for the national guard and our military, it must be legislated and taxed upon the citizenry.
Please move to the EU where the government will protect you from me. I have no locks on my weapons.
I bought a new 12-gauge a couple of years ago and it came with a gun lock, which wound up quickly at the bottom of the garbage can. I don't want to begrudge anybody who wants it, but I'm not doing it.
