House Race Hotline Extra: Utah 03 Some quotes to illustrate the importance of this race.
"There is a very good chance that he could go down," Jeff Hartley, executive director of the Utah Republican Party, tells First Read. "You wouldn't have the involvement from the White House if he weren't in jeopardy." (NBC News)
Consultant LeVarr Webb: "A low turnout is expected, so be one of the few who make a difference and have a voice." (Utah Policy Daily) )
UT GOP Chair Joe Cannon "says he's trying to stay neutral" in his brother's UT 03 primary, "but it didn't come across that way" in his online comments about challenger/alleged Satan victim John Jacob (Salt Lake Tribune).
A poll published over the weekend by the Deseret Morning News and KSL-TV, conducted by Dan Jones & Associates, found Cannon ahead 46-33 percent among registered voters in the 3rd District. But 18 percent of voters remained undecided. "That's one of the highest 'undecideds' numbers I've seen so close to a primary election," said Jones, who has polled in Utah for more than 30 years. (Deseret News)
Jacob backtracks on his "Satan" comments: "What the [Salt Lake Tribune] reported and what I said weren't the same thing. It wasn't that [the devil] was trying to keep me out of Washington. I was just saying when you're trying to get into politics, there's a lot of adversity.
Contrary to reports of saying it was keeping me from being there, it was going to help me in training when I get there. It's not the devil; it's adversity." (Utah Policy Daily)
and, that's a very small percentage... it appears (to me) people in Utah are as angry as we are in Arizona about illegal immigration and ready to punish anyone who is in favor of it.
Well it should be fun. I hope there is an election thread live on here. It will be interesting to see what happens as the Soul of the Republican Party is being battled over. On one sides the Forces of right represented by Kng Bush, Queen Laura and dashing Prince Cannon versus the evil forces of Mad Duke Tancredo, his master Dr Himmler Tanton, gollum like Tancredo and their poor pawn Jacob
Well, sure, if you bother to click to the Members page (and note whose name is up top in the banner!).
That sure doesn't make Reagan right, look at the total disaster it created.
It'll be late. Polls close at 8 p.m. Utah time.
Or maybe not. Make no mistake, I realize you guys don't understand the word failure. Or any word with 3 syllables, for that matter.
and, it was pre-911. President Bush and Vincente Fox held a joint news conference the August before 911 to call for the same things Reagan wanted, then September 11th changed everything.
You're referring to 30 years ago and a different era, perhaps an idealistic one, we're talking today and what needs to be done now. Most of us agree except for you apparently the amnesty failed, we don't need another.
Many people who claim to be so-called real conservatives, do so in President Reagan's name. Yet they all too conveniently gloss over the fact that President Reagan signed the first, and so far only, genuine illegal alien amnesty law in the nation's history.
Your post adds the missing element to discussions of RWR's signing of the 1986 amnesty. It is proof positive that he didn't play the fool to a bait-and-switch Congress, but instead that he fully concurred with the provisions of the 1986 act. In addition, if he had wanted to enforce strong sanctions against employers of illegals, he could have do so during the remaining two years of his 2nd term. He also could have built a wall, increased border security, and so on, thereby setting all-important precedents. The fact that he did not do so speaks volumes about his perspective on this issue.
Thats MOuntain right. Well I noticed they were doing the new electronic voting today so perhaps they will come in fast. Of course since its a new system the opposite might just occur
You betcha Reagan was pro illegal immigation. The bill Reagan pushed for and signed into law in 1986 allowed the numbver of illegal immigrants to go from 2.5 million in 1986 to 12 million
FALSE, Tator, that bill was worked up under Carter and refined in Congress without Reagan support, EXCEPT the demand that employer enforcement be added and applied.... guess how hard the Dem congress enforced the law while inviting in TWICE as many illegals for amnesty as they sold the program on...over 3M instead of 1.6MM. Reagan signed it but was NOT pro illegal. No reconstructing history allowed.
If failure means allowing hordes of invaders to continue to cross our borders and the hordes of invaders who have already violated our borders to stay, receive amnesty for their crime, obtain public benefits, reap rewards, and get a privileged path to citizenship while they are responsible for the deaths of over 9,000 Americans per year, then we will not understand nor accept failure.
Go ahead and raise the white flag and welcome the invaders with which you collaborate. And let history forget you were our countrymen.
Yes, that's mountain time -- two hours behind the East Coast. Everything I read on the blogs people said they thought their voting went really smooth. One of our freepers is working the polls all day today, so it will be interesting to get his input when it's over.
In the 1980s employer sanctions never seriously got off the ground because Ted Kennedy gutted enforcement funds. Reagan did attempt to enforce them and got the system setup. It took 18 months to even get it started.
It's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback and make all kinds of wild assumptions about the motivations involved. But the bottom line is we know now from the 1986 amnesty what not to do today.
"Well, sure, if you bother to click to the Members page (and note whose name is up top in the banner!)."
Tancredo is the chairman. Just because you dislike Tancredo doesn't mean you have to act totally irrational. What you wrote would be no different from me writing: "why is president Bush's name displayed so much on the GOP's website? He's not the only republican! There are 287 republicans in the house of representatives and senate!"
I was wondering how many utah folks would be n here. Actually I think a this race is not the exciting one out there for the natives. It appears all sort of charges of corruption etc is being talked about in another one out there.
They've been saying it depends on the turnout. I'm beginning to think now anything's possible.
