Cannabis as bad as heroin, warns UN drugs watchdog

THE drugs watchdog of the United Nations has rebuked the UK government's policy change on cannabis, saying it sent a confusing message to young people.

UN experts also warned that a major increase in the potency of cannabis means it now poses health risks similar to those of heroin.

The decision to reclassify cannabis as a Class C drug - made by the Home Secretary in 2004 - was implicitly criticised by Antonio Maria Costa, the executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, who warned of the growth in its use.

Cannabis had become more potent in the past few decades and governments that maintained inadequate policies got the "drug problem they deserve", Mr Costa said in the 2006 World Drug Report.

"Policy reversals leave young people confused as to just how dangerous cannabis is," he added. "

The cannabis pandemic, like other challenges to public health, requires consensus, a consistent commitment across the political spectrum and by society at large."

He warned governments against playing party politics with the classification of cannabis as its harmful effects were "no longer that different" to the damage caused by cocaine and heroin.

That cops would be able to spend more time catching other violent criminals were it not for drug arrests?

Your argument is weak.

First, drugs are currently against the law, therefore, law enforcement officers would be derelict of duty if they didn't apprehend drug law offenders.

Second, quite a few drug arrest result from law enforcement officers being called for other reasons, like violent crimes.

I'm sure that all you pot heads just sit around peacefully saying "Hey man" and "Groovy man" but the meth heads are killing people and breaking things.

As a side note: 29 people were arrested in the Huntsville, Al area yesterday with several tons of meth and pot. All of the meth and pot was brought in from Mexico. 27 of the 29 arrested were illegals.

What a stunning, brilliant argument. Full of logic, wit, and strength. You must be a Dartmouth man.

"The problem is they are making pot to be much more addictive and much more potent that it use to be."

Making it to be more addictive...ROTFLMFAO

I will agree that advances in cultivation and hybrids have made the varietals of marijuana more potent. HOWEVER, addiction comes in two forms...physical and psychological...marijuana is a psychological addiction meaning that you want to smoke more because it makes you feel good, not because you are chemically addicted to needing more THC(active ingredient in pot). Since the addiction is not chemical your statement is both patently absurd, shows a complete lack of understanding, and experience in the area. Please get your information from places other than anti drug commercials, such as personal experience.

Actually, there is evidence that THC is physically addictive. Please get your information some place other than from pro-druggie websites.

Also, I looked at your study, and it seems that the monkeys prove that they are addicted not how. They could be injecting it because of chemical or psychological addiction. Monkeys also know what feels good.

That is my point, one is not toxic right away [...] The other is instantly toxic (pot).

"Toxic" means poisonous ... only alcohol is that.

Why do you think it's relevant to legality that alcohol takes a few minutes to take effect while marijuana is much faster?

It's even only toxic to pets!

There, now that's correct. Note that the correct version supports none of your hysterical claims.
