UN SECRETARY-General Kofi Annan has called for restraint as Israeli troops massed on the Gaza border for a possible offensive after the kidnapping of a soldier.
Annan urged all parties to "exercise restraint at this grave moment, and to take all possible steps to avoid further escalation and bloodshed," his spokesman said.
According to the spokesman, the secretary general was "alarmed" at the recent events triggered by a Palestinian militant raid early Sunday on an Israeli army post on the Gaza Strip border.
Two Israeli servicemen and two Palestinian fighters were killed and a 20-year-old Israeli corporal, who also holds French nationality, was snatched by the raiders.
Annan's spokesman said the UN chief had called for the "safe and immediate release" of the captured soldier.
Three Palestinian groups, including the armed wing of Hamas, has called for the release of all Palestinian women and children from Israeli jails in exchange for information on the kidnapped soldier.
The deal was rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who has ordered commanders to prepare a major offensive after the abduction.

The Israelis have to understand that those muslims who read the Koran (which is probably only a fairly small percentage) want them DEAD. Small percentage though it is, they are large in number compared to the Jews. In the end, they will either be driven into the sea, dispersed to the four corners of the earth as in time past or they will draw a line in the sand with koran reading blood. Oh yeah.. I thought about that... maybe when Israel finally has the fortitude to launch a nuke( I would prefer they do this against Iran first), in the aftermath, the Islamic world will temper down.
