WASHINGTON - The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee called Sunday for criminal prosecution of The New York Times, saying its report Friday on government surveillance of confidential banking records "compromised America's anti-terrorist policies."
Interviewed on Fox News Sunday, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., accused the newspaper of compromising national security when it exposed a Treasury Department program that attempts to track terrorist financing by secretly monitoring worldwide money transfers. The program, instituted after the Sept. 11 attacks, bypasses safeguards put in place to prevent government abuse.
Similar reports were published the same day by other media outlets.
"By disclosing this in time of war, they have compromised America's anti-terrorist policies," said King, referring to New York Times reporters and editors.

I guess it would matter more if anybody read it.
They can start with extracting the names of the sources. If they uncover illegality by the NYT in the process, then let em have it.
Got my vote! Nail the treasonous scum, DoJ!
I'm not holding my breath. Gutless Gonzales won't do a frigging thing about it, except recommend another *double secret probation*.
I'm for it.
Not only the NYT Times should be prosecuted but people who hold classified info should know better than not to tell them anything since they are untrustworthy....
And the White House's position... grab the ankles again, America?
Do it!
The NY Times fully supports the War on The War on Terror.
The Times should be prosecuted, along with every other newspaper and media outlet that ran this story. It is a clear violation of the law.
"The Times should be prosecuted, along with every other newspaper and media outlet that ran this story. It is a clear violation of the law."
Exactly which law?
The law that says it is illegal to divulge classified information
If publishing the nature of this program is in the public interest, the knowing the sources is in the public interest. Unless I know the sources how can I evaluate the credibility of the report. In the absence of knowing the sources, how am I to be assured that the story is not another Jayson Blair fabrication?
And while we're at it, I'd like to see whoever exposed this operation to the NY Times exposed and prosecuted. This would not have happened without a leak.
"Exactly which law?"
Isn't it illegal to give aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war?
Do you mean to say that stealing national security records and selling them on the open market is a crime?
The Espionage Act of 1917 for starters.
