Petition Signers Against Same-Sex Marriage Exposed

POSTED: 9:40 am EDT June 23, 2006
UPDATED: 12:29 pm EDT June 23, 2006

A Westside church is defending its Web site publishing of a list of Floridians who signed a petition against same-sex marriage, according to a WJXT-TV report.

The Christ Church of Peace is publishing the names and addresses of the 400,000 people who support a ban on same-sex marriage, the report said.

The church's pastor, who backs gay marriage, said he wants to add a new Christian voice to the debate about lifestyle his church believes should be legal.

The debate about gay marriage is a private one for many people, but those who signed a petition against the unions have been exposed. "I think it's a right of privacy. If you want it on (the Web site) you should put it on, not somebody else, " said Beverly Hughes.

The posting was an eyeopener for Michelle Chance-Sangthong, according to the WJXT-TV report. She committed to her partner, Toy, surrounded by more than 200 guests -- people she thought supported their union. "We were shocked and saddened to find the very same names that were the first on our guest book were also signatures on this petition that could prevent us from having equal rights," Chance-Sangthong said.

The publication started a debate for Chance-Sangthong, which one group hopes other people will have. "By desiring dialogue with other folk and by supporting all families, straight and gay," said the Rev. Gary Debusk of the Christ Church of Peace.

The amendment up for discussion reads that marriage is,"The legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife," and that, "No other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized." Currently, nearly half a million people have signed the petition and many have been vocal about the issue over the last few months.

"The same-sex marriage would subject our children to a vast, untested social experiment," said Bishop Victor Galeone of the Diocese of St. Augustine. The Christ Church of Peace said it wants to be the Christian voice supporting gay marriages -- a voice some of the church's members said isn't as loud, but just as important, WJXT-TV reported.

"I would at least like the option to become part of his family and him to become part of mine," said legal-gay-marriage advocate Andrew Grayot. Supporters of the new amendment said they need about 100,000 more signatures to get the amendment on the ballot in 2008.

So, when the pro-homosexual forces find themselves losing in the courts as well as the public square, they resort to bullying and intimidation tactics of desperation.....nothing new for the Left, of course, but to publicly expose names from a petition document is not an effort to foster "dialogue" as this pastor states, but to frighten people into not signing the petition.  Once a person's full name is made public, it's not that much more difficulty to find out all sorts of additional information about them, such as their address, telephone number, place of work, children's names.....the homosexual Left will absolutely stop at nothing to get their way.

By now it should be very clear; it's wrong to take it in the rear.

These people are pure evil, and it has very little to do with homosexuality.

Sounds like justification for a CCW permit to me.

Just in case that "open and meaningful conversation" comes knocking on your door.

I seem to recall (not being a Floridian) that Florida gun and carry laws are a bit more sane than in many other places, so hopefully the brave folks who sign this petition will also take the opportunity to fully exercise their Constitutional rights of self-protection if they haven't already.

I've been getting the impression from a variety of homosexual-related issues over the past few decades that the pro-homo Left will be particularly vicious, even more so than with other issues pertaining to Left vs. Right.  They will instantly descend to gutter-level depravity and lawlessness.....truly an indication of who they are.

Open Note to Pastor Debusk:

It is not YOUR church.
Someday, everybody is gonna have to make sure it is not them
to whom Christ refers to in Matthew 7:22-23. That goes for
YOU too. Start scrambling.

Perhaps you missed the image caption: "The Christ Church of Peace is publishing the names and addresses of the 400,000 people who support a ban on same-sex marriage."

Evidently the addresses are already "out there" with no research required.

Yes, sorry about that....I noticed my error instantly after I posted my comment.....but I KNEW it wouldn't be long before somebody brought it up  :-)

This is truly a terrifying level of intimidation that the pro-homo Left is engaging in....how long before children of petition signers are harassed on their way to school, because the Left has staked out their homes?  Is firebombing of petition signers' homes next?

I think the response is clear - contact the church and request your name be added to the list. I just did.

If the petition's a public document, I don't see the problem. If you don't want your name known, don't sign petitions. If you're not willing to take the guff that comes along with taking a stand, don't sign petitions.

Indeed. What is the point of signing a petition other than to make a PUBLIC statement? The signers should be glad that this church is publicizing their public act, and for free at that.

Same ol drivel from the same ol libnuts. They are losing on so many issues, this just being one of them, that all they have left to fight with is essentially hate speech and intimidation tactics that will, eventually fail as well.

I have no real quarrel with those of the gay community, and I would imagine that the majority of the gay community would be as opposed to this action by this goofy "church" as we are. We only see these types of things from the loony fringe of the radical wing of the lefties. It's no different than the cult that goes around the nation harassing the families at the funerals of fallen servicemen and service women. The same sick mentality that is nothing remotely close to the teachings of Christ.

Opposing the legalization of gay marraige is the right thing to do. I'm not arrogant enough to claim that I know what God's preference is on this..but I do have an instinctive understanding that Gay marraige is a bad idea.

One for you if you want it.

Is this a branch of the Metropolitan Community "Church"?

There is no need to be arrogant about knowing how God feels about this...it is plainly written in scriptures just exactly what he thinks about homosexuals~read on....

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders, nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Leviticus 18 :22 " 'Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.

"I'm not arrogant enough to claim that I know what God's preference is on this..."

It's not arrogance, it's just reading. He makes it crystal clear. Every religion in the world says the same thing, and that's not by accident.
