In the wake of his June 13 primary win over Harris Miller, former Navy Secretary James Webb (D) has added eleven percentage points to his support in a match-up with incumbent Senator George Allen (R).
The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll for the U.S. Senate shows Allen leading Webb 51% to 41%.

Clearly, Webb is benefitting from press coverage following his primary victory. But look for Allen to recover in the coming weeks.

And this is likely as good as it's going to get for Webb. Virginians need to ask why a Republican suddenly changes party to run for the Senate? Does this guy have any core beliefs or anchoring philosophy, or is he just a whore who changes parties in order to be able to run for the Senate?

I don't think Allen is in trouble, but I also don't think he is ready for prime time as many Freepers like to think.

I agree. We need him in the Senate but he's not prime material for a presidential run.

If Allen wants to be a 2008 contender, then he must win his Senate race by at least 20 points.

I dunno about that. As of now, I consider him part of a pack of GOPers hot for the nomination, but one that will ultimately be rejected by national GOP voters.

I really don't see Allen winning the nomination. The best he can hope for is Veep.

I can't do the beautiful little table like on the FEC website, so I'm reformatting the info:
ALLEN, GEORGE
Net receipts: $9,591,989
Net Disb: $3,131,190
Cash: $7,562,682
Debt: $0
Through: 05/24/2006
WEBB, JAMES H JR
Net Receipts: $547,956
Net Disb: $328,238
Cash: $219,718
Debt: $100,100
Through: 05/24/2006
Webb will pick up some cash now that he's won the primary, but $7 million? Does the DNC even have that much money?

Allen to recover? He hasn't lost any support.

A 10 point lead? How could this be? Admittedly, I never heard of George Allen outside of Free Republic. Still, he is portrayed here as the most famous Virginian save for the founders. Surely, he is like an alter ego to the citizens of the Commonwealth.

I've been seeing Webb signs everywhere in the last month. Now at least I know what he's running for lol.

Sounds like some Idaho Republican delegates were telling about, just before we won a huge vote to close the primary.

but he isn't going to be president.
Why do you say that?
To: Delphinium
I don't think he will have much of a national appeal. What I have seen of him hasn't been too impressive. He comes across as a nice enough guy but a bit slow on the uptake.
After eight years of navigating Dubya's speech pattern, I think most GOPers won't want another fairly slow-witted, although good, guy. We will go for someone who can articulate our positions cogently and convincingly.
No more befuddled CiCs, sorry.
