CBS to Rather: Good Night, And Good Luck
The Washington Post ^ | 6/21/06 | Tom Shales

Dan Rather is a free man. After an appropriately acrimonious final round of legal wrangling, his 44 years with CBS News came to an end yesterday -- or will come to an end today. Or will end Friday. There's a bit of confusion on that point.

Those who have followed the awkward exit of Rather from his position first as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" last year, then as a CBS News employee this year, often ask a simple question: How could a network for which Rather has done so much and served so loyally treat him so shabbily as the curtain falls?...

CBS will pay Rather, either by lump sum or biweekly paychecks, through November, when his contract is officially up. Since he makes $12 million a year, that was worth arguing about, and CBS executives did argue until Monday. As most of those who follow such events know, Rather was removed as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" a year short of his 25th anniversary after the airing of an apparently flawed "60 Minutes II" report on George W. Bush's alleged special treatment while in the Texas National Guard. Rather was the correspondent on that report. One producer lost her job, others are suing....

Rather says that, though 74, he has no intention of leaving broadcast news. But watching the farewell report last night, one couldn't help thinking: We shall not see his like again. Ever. Because the domain he dominated is one of the things he is taking with him.

The world has changed a lot in Rather's 44 years at CBS. Yesterday, it changed a little more.

Yes, indeed. When lies go around, the truth will eventually come around.

No kidding. TV news is mostly watched by an older audience whose numbers will only continue to shrink.

Well, I'm just some dolt in flyover country, but I'll take a shot:

The rest of the MSM hates Rather for two reasons. First is that, even by their standards, he is a self-centered, pompous, arrogant jerk. This is similar to how all the other MLB owners hate George Steinbrenner.

The second, and far more important reason, is that RatherGate showed just how far the MSM goes to distort the news, and quite frankly, they have not recovered since. Gunga Dan blew their cover and irretrievably damaged all their credibility.

CBS was embarrassed by Rather, and it's time for him to go quietly into the night.

SeeBS's send off credited him to being the first with the report that JFK had died. Didn't it come out that he had NOT confirmed that fact when he went live with it?

The last time he did that we got "Kenneth, what's the frequency" from GungaDan.

Don't forget that Dan Ratherbiased also was a part of the effort to see America return to simple minded BS. He went on David Letterman's program a couple weeks after the 9-11 attacks, they shared a cry, and discussed whether it was okay to laugh again.

an apparently flawed "60 Minutes II" report

"Apparently" flawed? Is this joker STILL in denial?

Because the domain he dominated is one of the things he is taking with him.

The domain he dominated in was 3rd rank ratings, throwing a temper tantrum on the air when a tennis game ran too long and making up the news.

Bernard Goldberg said last night on Fox that Rather had made 250 million in his career. And that Rather's leaving CBS did not have much to do with the National Guard debacle. CBS was simply not going to continue paying that kind of money for a third place finish in a three man race.

How could Rather promote forged documents and refuse to refute them in light of evidence that they were false? How? Because he is a biased liberal hack and deserves what he got. He won't be missed.
