Somehow, "abduction" doesn't seem adequate to describe that number of people being taken.

Sadly, this is what happens when you don't have enough cops (coalition and Iraqi troops) on the street.

In that situation, you don't go with them. You force them to open fire because the other option is probably worse.

The Iraqi gov't needs to wake up their populace and let them be armed. If the gov't can't protect everybody all the time, the people need to be capable of protecting themselves. A small armed band facing 80 Colt 45s would feel different than a small armed band facing 80 unarmed civilians.

And in Florida we had guards opening fire on others at a prison when authorities arrived to arrest some prison guards.

Gunmen Snatch 80 Iraqi Factory Workers
Updated: 16:11, Wednesday June 21, 2006
Gunmen have abducted at least 80 workers from a factory north of Baghdad.
It is believed to be the largest single abduction in Iraq.
The kidnappers struck as the workers were waiting to board buses home after their shift.
Five busloads of employees of the state-owned Great Victory factory at Taji were commandeered by dozens of gunmen in at least five cars, the officials said.
One source put the number of those kidnapped at at least 100 and possibly many more.
More follows...

something has to get the Iraqi's motivated to strike back at these swine. I don't know what the breaking point is going to be - but I hope that the innocent civilians start to act by giving these barbarians no place to hide. I want to see them find them and bring them to justice....and I would like to see some brutal justice

First thought: test run.
What if they did it here by picking a "no guns" facility or any government office?

This a result of the new AQ leader, he wants to show that he can turn the tide in this war and that it is not over yet. He needs a body count and media attention and this kidnapping covers both.
It will probably not end well for the workers.
