IRAQ: Armed foreign gangs fleeing, reports (terrorists in Ramadi on the run)
AKI ^ | 2006 Jun 20

Baghdad, 20 June (AKI) - Sources in Ramadi in the restive al-Anbar province report that large groups of armed foreign militants are fleeing towards the Syrian border, as US and Iraqi forces tighten their siege on the city. Ramadi, some 100 kilometres west of Baghdad, is a stronghold of the insurgency and there are reports of many residents also fleeing in fear of an assault. Sources told Adnkronos International (AKI) that local tribes were also pursuing foreign terrorists "because of the immense damage they have done to infrastructure and the bad name they have given the insurgency by terror attacks against innocent civilians."

The sources added that "the armed men are heading towards the highlands near the Euphrates in an effort to find a secure refuge," emphasising that "the murder of the head of the Karabila tribe, Osama al-Jadaan, in al-Mansour last month, by al-Qaeda operators, triggered a vendetta by his relatives and followers."

What is Baghdad like after the 40000 or is it 70000 troops patrolling the streets? Is it much better? Are people noticing a big difference?

We're already guilty until proven innocent, might as well finish that job and let the 101st take a break.

Cut them off and let them know what it means to wear arrow shirts. Go get them and annihilate them all. Don't let any get away and show the terrorists what a massacre really is.

If we know they're fleeing, why not attack them with helicopters and UAVs? I mean, we're going to let them slip away?

Maybe its because it is propaganda from our side?

So what should they do then, Latin lovers? Centimate them? I'm sure you don't want our troops to simply -mate them. 8^)

Why stop at Damascus? Take Damascus, too, and be prepared for an Iranian flank attack. My bet is, after the November elections, we go full bore.

Well, it's been somewhat noisy because the terrorists see it as a challenge. We're hearing explosions and firefights out there, but not at levels we've heard in past violence spikes. But, yes, there is a big change.

There are checkpoints and troops all over town now. Our Iraqi employees are telling us about traffic snarls due to that, but they aren't complaining because they know that this should lead to more peaceful surroundings.

As a result of this, more terrorists are being rounded up. Iraqi citizens are ratting them out at a higher rate now that they feel safer with the escalated troop presence.

So it's turbulent now, but this should lead to calm sometime in the near future. The Iraqi PM says the clampdown on Baghdad will "last as long as it neeeds to."

Thanks for letting me know about this Allegra!

I am really interested in the progression of this as well as what is going on in Ramadi.

It will take more time to develop more accurate sensor systems to detect hidden IEDs. Don't worry, there will be a role for the Air Force too. I have been doing my own research for years and have confidence its on the track. It only takes time to do all the research and testing with improvements from version 1, as well as time to manufacture each to reach all troops on the front line. The first few phases of SDLC does often take a lot of time, and somewhat irritating. It's the last few phase were direct impact is visible.

Too bad we don't have this in service anymore:

They would have been perfect carrying some 8,000 pounds of ordanance to drop on those poor foreign insurgents.
