Top conservative leaders have written President Bush telling him to drop his insistence on a guest-worker program and a path to citizenship for illegal aliens and instead support the 85 percent of congressional Republicans who want to tighten law enforcement first.
Signers include William J. Bennett, Robert H. Bork, Ward Connerly, David A. Keene, Phyllis Schlafly and a number of think-tank academics and pundits.
The immigration debate is the first major issue on which Mr. Bush finds himself opposing a majority of Republicans in Congress and depending on Democrats to deliver a victory. In their letter, the conservatives tell Mr. Bush to side with his fellow Republicans in Congress or risk repeating the 1986 immigration law that promised enforcement and amnesty but delivered only the amnesty.
"Border and interior enforcement must be funded, operational, implemented and proven successful and only then can we debate the status of current illegal immigrants or the need for new guest-worker programs," 39 conservative leaders write in the letter, to be released today. A copy was obtained yesterday by The Washington Times. The letter was addressed as well to House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee.
Across the House and Senate, 85 percent of Republicans voted either for the House bill, which is an enforcement-only bill, or against the Senate bill, which dramatically increases immigration and offers a new right to citizenship for illegal aliens.
"That's pretty overwhelming among congressional Republicans. That shows a distance from [Senate bill sponsors Sens. John McCain and Edward M. Kennedy] and what the White House has been saying recently," John Fonte, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute who is helping organize the letter, said in an interview.

I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and REALLY want to consider it as a case of the former, as opposed to the latter, for if so--and as I'm convinced he is NOT stupid--then its a sell-out to special interest, globalist (which I'm somewhat inclined to believe he's sympathetic towards)big business, Chamber, etc., and cares not what the majority of us Conservatives want; which would be very detrimental to his presidency, his legacy, as well as the Republican Party.

Oh boy, another one. That's a useless strategy. Disengage from the political process and don't complain about the results. If you won't vote for politicians who do support your wishes, don't be surprised that you won't get what you want.
If you want something to happen, you have to get involved.
Bull! This one needs a stake in the heart. I won't beleive its dead till I smell its rotting corpse. A politician saying something is dead means nothing to me.
I seriously doubt it.
What I meant is perhaps as a shrewd politician (which he is not to mention his Guru, Karl) he will no doubt (and here its wishful thinking) see the results of the elections, whereby, those who are for strong border enforcement and opposed Amnesty, fare better than those who don't and will "see the light?"
Have fun being completely politically irrelevant the rest of your lives. Life requires compromise. HERE is what happens when you all indulge in this sort of feverish 100%erism.
Ok, you "break" with the Republicans because YOU personally are not getting ONLY 100% of ONLY what YOU personally want. So wander off with the rest of the whiners and form your own group. Let's call it the "Real American Party"
So you all feel peachy until suddenly Issue Such and such comes up. Well suddenly some of you have ONE side and the some the other. So what happens. Same thing, "You are betraying me, I hate you, Whaaa!" and you splinter into the "Real American Party" the the "Ultra Real American Party" and then issue B and the Ultra Reals suddenly split with the Ultra Conservative Real American party forming and so on and so on and so on and so forth until it you and 6 of your relatives sitting around telling each other how great it is you all are so ideologically pure!
You will be completely irrelevant and get 100% of NOTHING politically but, boy, you can all sit around Freeper and pat each other on the back about how dogmatically pure you are. Whee will that not be some fun! Irrelevant but Pure. There is a catchy slogan for your "third party"!
To be effective at anything in life, but especially politics, requires the ability to build a coalition. NONE of you fanatic 100%er seem willing to grasp that basic fact.
Unless you're referring to a third party take-over of the democRAT party, you couldn't be more wrong. Republicans voting for a third party will elect the democRATS with disastorous consequences.
hey genius!
do you even bother to read posts addressed to you
TAKE ME OFF YOUR PING LIST!
Why would "Americans" get thrown out? You do know that ILLEGAL INVADERS are not "Americans", right?
Ok. Like what?
I am right there wishfully thinking with you!
Why does he bother to fight the war on terror when they can just cross the border so easily? With a water, bread and a welcome mat. Seems hypocritical.
C'mon, you know better than that, MNJ. The House may be saying that to our faces but I'll bet your monthly salary there is negotiiations going on behind the scene.
BASE TO BUSH: You will hear us come November!
(Base to Bush: Stop illegals)
He's going to. He's asked Congress to make them citizen's...what more do you want. Whiners! Sheesh!
(sarcasm)
And you are the type who will compromise on everything so that eventually you have nothing. Some things are not up for compromise. Integrity, WOT, The life of my children, American sovereignty, That which has been passed down for our protection to pass down to our posterity and been protected with the blood of our/my ancestors and patriots.
Buzz off and don't ping me again.
I've heard that the first generation Mexocan population does pretty well here. Unfortunately their offspring, the 2nd and 3rd generations, are the ones having the real trouble: gang membership, asimilation problems, radical. There was an excellent report on it on FOXNews the other night. It basically said our theory of "well, these families have traditional family values in common with us" is a myth. (At least with their kids, who have grown up to HATE America. Thanks to public school teachers.) BUMP
