The Statue of Liberty holding the torch high to show the light of liberty to the world is a symbol that the ACLU decided to adopt. So as the ACLU boasts about protecting our Bill of Rights most people expect them to set the example. While some people are still clinging to the false hope that the ACLU truly believe in what they claim to, in many eyes their light is fading.
Several board members of the American Civil Liberties Union expressed concerns at a meeting yesterday over proposed standards that would prohibit board members from publicly criticizing the organization’s policies and internal operations.
“I cannot vote for these proposals, as I have violated them nearly every time I have written an op-ed piece or spoken to the press,” said Mary Ellen Gale, an at-large member.
Bennett Hammer, a board member representing the organization’s New Mexico affiliate, cited examples of decisions in the last few years that he said had embarrassed the A.C.L.U. and contended that adopting the proposals would be yet another of “the things that have made us a laughingstock with the public.”
The board nonetheless voted against motions to strike the controversial provisions from the proposals and instead opted for further discussion.

First go to the ACLU website then look up the Civil Rights Attorneys Fees Awards Act of 1976 and then you will understand that the ACLU was never organized to protect anyone's civil rights...it was organized to MAKE MONEY by using the above law to force the government to pay it's attorney fees. Repeal the law the the ACLU will disappear.

The ACLU is not monolithic in composition. It is a blend of rabid liberals and merely mad liberals. The rabid ones now want to censor the merely mad whenever they have flashes of sanity. I foresee an exodus followed by an implosion.

Yet another testimony to the ultimate goal of the increasingly Stalinist nature of the ACLU being not for free speech but, conversely, for its suppression - and ultimately the imposition of totalitarianism in America.
Destroying religion is the Number One step in the process.
We could say the same thing about NPR and PBS, but when they had the chance, the GOP wilted at the chance to eliminate their funding. The ACLU's defense of Rush against an overzealous RAT prosecutor was admirable, but their other efforts, especially NAMBLA, make me ask the same question you are.
I don't think of the ACLU as a laughingstock. That would mean they're buffoons -- silly, comic, laughable. They're anything but. They are socialism's advance column, nothing less. If the public perceives THAT, then I suspect the organization is doomed, except for a few diehards who will ultimately have to admit their long-term goal. But the casual fellow traveler, or worse, the idealist who actually believes the ACLU represents some kind of ideological purity, will long since have departed.
