White House endorses Cannon
Deseret Morning News(Utah) ^ | 6/19/06

PROVO — Laura Bush is campaigning for Utah Congressman Chris Cannon. With both Cannon and challenger John Jacob poised to release television ads, the first lady recorded a phone message last week asking Republicans in Utah's 3rd District to vote for Cannon in the party's June 27 primary. "We need Chris in Congress so he can continue securing our borders, protecting our families and helping make the president's tax relief permanent," Bush said in the message, which hasn't been released yet

Word of the White House endorsement leaked to the Jacob camp over the weekend through a Republican Party channel. "The president apparently is going to come out to support Chris," Jacob said Sunday during a debate on KUTV. The first lady could be a powerful ally among Republicans in Utah, where President Bush's approval ratings are higher than nearly anywhere else in the nation. He had a 65 percent approval rating last month among voters registered in the 3rd District, according to a poll done by Dan Jones & Associates

"My guess is she's over 70 percent," Jones said Sunday. "That will help Cannon. How much, we really don't know. Sometimes you can really translate popularity and sometimes you can't." A White House endorsement is rare in aprimary, Jones said. "It's unusual for the White House or influential members of Congress to get involved in the primary election of a state Congressional district." Jacob campaign consultant Hayden Hill called the move a sign the race is tightening. "Obviously (Cannon) knows he's vulnerable, and he's bringing out the big guns," Hill said. The first lady's message is a part of a Cannon campaign strategy to record dozens of local leaders and use the recordings in phone calls to likely voters. Bush's message will go to a broader range of potential voters. The first lady's message is short, and campaign manager Nathan Rathbun said the Cannon campaign has not decided when to start dialing up phone numbers with it.

Thank you Thank you for that link. I am very well pleased today. The Tacredo/Buchanan faction will fail again in trying to unseat a fellow Republican. Now that Tancredo has now adopted this Corsi anti Nafta the Globalist are under my bed issue as well, folks will wake up sooner or later.

We shall see if his past moderate stand on immigration (not his present pandering) will win the day.

"The worst that can happen for the GOP would be a big Cannon victory that tells the elites all is well with pro-amnesty policies... then the real disaster will befall us in November".

You are talking about some freepers here who will have to eat a lot of crow if Cannon loses. For months we have been debating this issue. Now we have a real test of their side of the issue and our side of the issue...an election based on immigration policy. Although Cannon is now running away from his past moderate stance on immigration, the citizens of Utah know the real story. Cannon has been Bush's point man on this crazy amnesty policy and was forced into a runnoff in 2004 as well. The big myth that American wants a "comprehensive" immigration bill bill will go up in flames if Cannon loses.

"A 97 ACU rating for Cannon is not "conservative"? LOL!!!"

Then why is he running for his political life right now.

I'll tell you in one word: Immigration!!!

Let's try this again, from that very thread (in fear that we go through the same circular debate again):

Dane, as usual, conducts arguments in the only way it knows how.

...folks will wake up sooner or later.

Yes. One day they will wake up and admit that this change in our culture is just what Bush has wanted all along.

THE "NEW AMERICAN"

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. That remains to be seen:

He may very well rue the day he said" we love immigrants in Utah. And we don't make the distinction very often between legal and illegal. "

I find that statement very offensive, don't you?

It's a stupid statement, yes. But to throw out a guy who is solidly conservative for an unknown seems silly, to me.

I'd be very surprised if Utahans do that.

What happened in San Diego proved that.

Really. Then why did Bush, Laura Bush and Cheney all run telephone ads for Bilbray while the Minutemen were endorsing the independent?

A quick view of the headlines had me reading "White House endorses Clinton."

I need another beer - just for the nerves, of course...

Those of us who are supremely irritated about illegal immignaats do not like Cannon and will not vote for him ever again! Sorry that Laura is campaigning for him. She just lost my sympathy.

I'm not surprised at Bush: he endorses every RINO (although, despite Cannon's foaming-mouth devotion to supporting the immivasion, I can't truly call him a RINO); Sensenbrenner's endorsement hurts. Who knows, maybe he struck a deal with Cannon to blunt Cannon's opposition to Sensenbrenner's very good immigration bill; Cannon was actually quite muted.

Yes, I guess you and a bunch of others will be suprised. We will see how Cannon's moderate policy on immigration will play out in Utah.

It's played well for him for ten years. And the guy who's challenging him has some alien hiring issues himself.

Or maybe Sensenbrenner has genuine respect for Chris Cannon and knows he is not a "showhorse" ala tancredo.

It did not play well in 2004 either. He was also in a runnoff in 2004.

Of course he's changed his tune now. No mention of that great "comprehensive" program that we have dicussed often here. No he's running now on securing the borders. I've seen his ads on the internet.

Precisely why I am so disappointed in him. Cannon deserves no respect.

Yeah just kick at one of the most pro-life members in Congress.

I'm sure kate michaelman of NARAL agrees with you about Cannon.

Look, kick Cannon if you want, but I suspect neither you nor I will ever know as much about immigration as - (I seem to recall he was) - the former chair of the Immigration Committee. I haven't written any books about immigration - maybe you have. I'm saying Jacob is, well, frankly, nuts. There needs to be a little bit of reality brought into what's at stake here. If CC has ever drifted from "The Path," I suspect it is because of LDS doctrine that I, a Methodist, will never understand. His ACU rating is, however, unassailable. "Chris For Congress."
