PROVO Laura Bush is campaigning for Utah Congressman Chris Cannon. With both Cannon and challenger John Jacob poised to release television ads, the first lady recorded a phone message last week asking Republicans in Utah's 3rd District to vote for Cannon in the party's June 27 primary. "We need Chris in Congress so he can continue securing our borders, protecting our families and helping make the president's tax relief permanent," Bush said in the message, which hasn't been released yet
Word of the White House endorsement leaked to the Jacob camp over the weekend through a Republican Party channel. "The president apparently is going to come out to support Chris," Jacob said Sunday during a debate on KUTV. The first lady could be a powerful ally among Republicans in Utah, where President Bush's approval ratings are higher than nearly anywhere else in the nation. He had a 65 percent approval rating last month among voters registered in the 3rd District, according to a poll done by Dan Jones & Associates
"My guess is she's over 70 percent," Jones said Sunday. "That will help Cannon. How much, we really don't know. Sometimes you can really translate popularity and sometimes you can't." A White House endorsement is rare in aprimary, Jones said. "It's unusual for the White House or influential members of Congress to get involved in the primary election of a state Congressional district." Jacob campaign consultant Hayden Hill called the move a sign the race is tightening. "Obviously (Cannon) knows he's vulnerable, and he's bringing out the big guns," Hill said. The first lady's message is a part of a Cannon campaign strategy to record dozens of local leaders and use the recordings in phone calls to likely voters. Bush's message will go to a broader range of potential voters. The first lady's message is short, and campaign manager Nathan Rathbun said the Cannon campaign has not decided when to start dialing up phone numbers with it.
Prove that Jacob is better.
No *ifs* about, Cannon is definitely a "La Raza" boy, & it's very scary that *any* American politician would join forces with this group.
In fact I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a drivers license based on the matricula consular and of that I am proud." (Cannon)
Also scary that any pol would accept a 'matricula card' as a secure ID.
Last I heard, the phony MC's are now cheaper that the real one's issued by the corrupt mexican gov't......"supply & demand" at work.
Seems Cannon thinks it's *acceptable* for all illegals to have the *right* to carry several ID's.
Maybe someone should verify that Cannon is able to recognize a real MC from all the phony ones out there.????
You continue to get more bizarre by the day.
A 97 ACU rating for Cannon is not "conservative"? LOL!!!
LOL.....but Cannon sure seems to be a "La Raza" sycophant.
do you need the link ???
Well, since I so ignorant, why didn't Bush make an appearance with Cannon, instead of hiding behind his wife.
He was in the neighborhood last week in NM.
Surely he could have gone to Utah.
"Prove that Jacob is better"
We don't have to prove anything.
The voters of Utah will soon prove the Pro-Amnesty wrong, or prove we secure the borders crowd wrong.
We shall soon see.
More reasons to reject Cannon!!!! He's an open borders nut!! Kinda like you, huh? LOL What would we do if we didn't have you around to entertain us? LOL :o)
Rove must be pretty confident Cannon will win. If he loses, with Bush having become involved, that will be a real slap in the chops for Bush, and his vision of immigration reform will be as dead cadaver frozen at absolute zero.
With Bush having dropped in, Jacob is better than sliced bread with abalone on top if you want to kill Bush's vision of immigration reform with one thrust of the rapier.
No wonder tancredo and bay buchanan are pushing him.
Birds of a feather.
Yep probably, afterall Utah's 3rd district isn't exclusively filled with people who post on FR.
Gilchrist was supposed to win in CA also, but came in 3rd, even with all the free publicity from the John & Ken show in LA.
"Hey, look: Specter vs. Toomey, part 2."
My feeling exactly.
"Excellent! Glad our First Lady and the White House endorsed Cannon. We need more Senators who are like Congressman Cannon and care about Republican values. Glad that we in Texas have Senators Cornyn and Hutchison."
I too am glad we have Cornyn and Hutchison, who both are doing the right things on immigration and other issues.
however, I'm not pleased with how Bush went out of his way to help Specter in PA in 2004, and this looks like another example of the same.
A challenger from the right, and the White House snaps to attention to defeat the right-winger.
"Cannon, who knows everything there is to know about immigration, and refuses to pander to simplistic immigration solutions."
Really!!
Do you think AgJobs is *really* a good idea?!?!
Do you think giving amnesty and instate tuition to illegal aliens is *really* a good idea?!?!
He doesn't have to. Cannon will win easily.
Rove knows they cant just win, they need a big ...
"his vision of immigration reform will be as dead cadaver frozen at absolute zero."
... If Cannon scrapes by with a close call, given Jacobs is a newcomer and given Cannon's conservative background on everything *except* his pro-amnesty and out-of-touch immigration stance,
victory ... the conclusion will be obvious:
Touching amnesty is fatal to Republicans.
Rove needs a big victory to avoid this.
What is likely is a small victory for Cannon. Close call.
Not good enough for me. I want a stake driven through the heart of this worst. bill. ever. That takes a Cannon defeat to tell the DC elites that they are seriously out-of-touch with what the American people are wanting.
We want enforcement first - and only then talk to us about visas and guest workers and amnesty.
We sacrificed Delay over corruption scandals, even though he was deep down a decent man. Let's sacrifice Cannon to save the GOP from a terrible mistake on immigration.
It's a worthy trade.
The worst that can happen for the GOP would be a big Cannon victory that tells the elites all is well with pro-amnesty policies... then the real disaster will befall us in November.
Their elections aren't till November.
Because Dane never met an illegal he did not like.
Dane, I firmly believe these are the types of people driving the venomous war of words here on FR and elsewhere re illegal immigration and their new pet boogeyman, the North American Union/NAFTA superhighway.
Hmmmmm......like Cannon & La Raza ???
do you need the lnik ???
