TRENTON, N.J. -- Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy said he was arrested and roughed up by police over the weekend for intervening in an argument between a couple outside a Bradley Beach bar.
Healy said he had just left Barry's Tavern _ owned by his sister, Kathleen Barry _ around 2 a.m. on Saturday when he saw a couple arguing in the parking lot of a nearby auto shop. He said the man was jumping on the hood of his girlfriend's car.
After calmly talking the man down, Barry said, police arrived and began roughing up him and his wife.
"My lawyer has asked me not to speak, but I did absolutely nothing wrong," Healy told The Associated Press on Sunday.
He said police threw him on the ground and Maced him. When his wife tried to retrieve his glasses, police maced her too, according to Healy.

Pretty typical behavior for New Jersey cops on the take (they get rather territorial).
Can't wait for this to appear in the next episode of Law and Order. . .
but...but.... this couldn't have possibly happened..the police are perfect! /sarc
Ping!
BTW: "Race Card" in the keywords. Healy is a white Irish-American.
Current or Former Mayor?
Current. The city has seen crime escalate considerably since he was inaugurated.
I'll bet theres more to the story.
Healy is the Mayor of the second largest city in New Jersey (Jersey City), not the "small town" in question.
It's no wonder if police arrest him every time he tries to stop a crime!
After calmly talking the man down, Barry said, police arrived and began roughing up him and his wife.
yeah, cause when you leave a bar at 2am....youre in the clearest and calmest of moods.

Jersey City is indeed a large city, but this happened in Bradley Beach.

KEYPORT BUREAU
BRADLEY BEACH Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy was arrested on disorderly persons charges after he tried to involve himself with a police investigation into an early Saturday dispute outside Barry's Tavern, police said.
Police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Main Street about 2 a.m. Saturday following a report of a dispute between two individuals, said acting Dep. Chief of Police Leonard W. Guida.
While police were investigating that incident, Healy, 55, of 501 Monmouth Ave.,
approached the scene and tried to involve himself with the investigation, Guida said. After Healy ignored officers' requests to leave the scene, he was placed under arrest, Guida said.
Guida said Healy then resisted arrest, was taken to police headquarters and was
released about 90 minutes after his arrest, without being required to post bail.
Healy was issued complaints charging him with one count of disorderly conduct and one count of resisting arrest, Guida said.
If found guilty, Healy faces up to $2,000 in fines and six months in jail. A municipal court trial will be held in about two weeks, Guida said.
Attempts to reach Healy at his Monmouth Avenue address and at Barry's Tavern were unsuccessful.
