Doubts About Duke (Newsweek bails on Nifong)
Newsweek ^ | June 29, 2006 | Evan Thomas and Susannah Meadows

Posted on 06/18/2006 6:14:18 AM PDT by tlb

The prosecutor insists his rape case is strong. One big problem: the facts thus far.

...court documents in the case increasingly suggest that Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong had very little evidence upon which to indict three players for rape. Indeed, the available evidence is so thin or contradictory that it seems fair to ask what Nifong could have been thinking when he confidently told reporters that there was "no doubt" in his mind that the woman had been raped at the party held by the lacrosse team.

Nifong is described by some lawyers as an adversary who gets dug in—and won't budge. But Nifong's motives may have been political as well. He was six weeks away from an election when the Duke case came up. Durham voters are almost evenly divided between black and white. One of Nifong's opponents was black and the other was white, but the white lawyer was much better known in the community, thanks to winning a high-profile murder case. (That opponent, former assistant D.A. Freda Black, became a bitter enemy of Nifong's after, she claims, Nifong fired her.) Nifong promised black voters that he would not let the Duke case drop. He indicted two of the players two weeks before the election. He won narrowly, taking a larger share of the black vote than the other white candidate.

Meanwhile, the players and their families are lying low, trying to figure out how they can get their reputations back. Finnerty and Seligmann are underclassmen and may be able to transfer to another college and still play lacrosse if the charges are dropped. Evans has already started to pay a price in the real world. He was supposed to begin a good job after graduation, but the job offer was withdrawn.

Duke University needs to be held accountable as well. The leftwing whorehouse that is Duke's administration convicted and punished these kids without reason and with no semblance of due process. Defamation of character is a good place to start.

"...the so called "black leaders" who were sure that the white players were guilty simply because a black woman accused them of rape."

For a few different (and un-PC) reasons, white on black rape is so close to non-existent that it would have nade this case rather unique.......and a feather in Nifongs cap.......crime statistics show undeniable that white on black rape is statistically zero.

These kids were understandably disappointed with these 2 whores attractiveness, attitudes, and performance......and vengeance was the goal of the whores once they drove away from the house.

Newsweek along with the City of Durham has destroyed reputations and must pay a high price for their destructive actions.

I doubt that. The only people likely to pay a "high price" here are those who were falsely accused.

What libilities should Dook be held to?

Lately the talk on CNN has been about drinking and name calling by evidently drunk students,,,

"Drunk college students ! Shocking! They weren't 21 either! This has been going on for 5 years! They've had trouble with that house before! Where there's smoke...
and
"They engaged in name-calling. When you use that certain word you open the door to chaos...."

At least they didn't find any tobacco on the premisses. Or maybe they did but the school-- founded on a tobacco fortune,("thank you for smoking, yankees!" )supressed this evidence.

If the kids are underage to drink, then the skrewl is liable, having assumed in loco parentis authority over them (they have no problem with this status on indoctrinating students with PC bs.) There ending the lacrosse program and destroying or attempting to destroy their careers.

Dook is the cow. Milk it.

It'll be interesting to see how events play out when the charges are finally dropped

Like every other outcome that doesn't suit the leftist agenda, a one paragraph story on page D-13. Fortunately the alt media will be all over it.

According to their lawyer, Mark Simeon, the accuser's parents have not heard from their daughter for weeks and are very concerned.

NYT 6/08/06

The woman's father said in an interview Thursday that she was seeing a psychiatrist and was in no condition to testify. "I don't know how long it'll be before she gets back in her right frame of mind," he said. "It could be years."

Yes but what's so sad is that he knows that in his part of the country all he has to do is to stack the jury with ill-educated blacks and he has his conviction, regardless of the facts or evidence. I believe he is evil enough to sacrifice these three young men for his own skin.

"Since the dancer's word is now considered questionable, why doesn't Nifong test the DNA of the only lacrosse player not tested so far."

"The black vote during the primary. That's what."

It's a shame that to garner the "black vote" he had to promise to convict three white boys on trumped up rape charges. Maybe my kids will read "To Kill a Mockingbird, Part 2: The Duke Rape Case".

My how things have come 180 degrees in the last 70 years.

Too bad Johnnie Cochran is dead.

If I were White and the accused, I'd hire HIM as my defense lawyer.

Since he was so good at playing the race card, I have no doubt he'd have been equally skilled at defusing it. Plus I'd love to see him rip into the Durham Dirtbag on cross......

NEWSWEEK put the mug shots of two of the players—Reade Seligmann, 20, and Collin Finnerty, 19—on its cover the week after they were indicted.

Bears repeating
