Oswald worked on the Marine base where the U2 ground team was in Japan during the late 50s. Evidence is that he worked the radar on that job. Donald P. Bellisario, the creator of the show Quantum Leap did an episode about the Kennedy assassination in order to let people know about the Oswald he knew when they served together there in the Marines. He believes strongly that Oswald was the lone assassin. The bits in that show about Oswald's bizarre and violent behavior while in the Marines in Japan is from Bellisario's personal experiences.

Did you also know that Oswald defected to Russia, then was allowed to come back? That's one of the bizarre factoids that the conspiracy types show "proves" he must have been working for the government. Why else would they let him into the country? As if Che Gueverra wouldn't have gotten into the country!

Furthermore, I bitterly resent the suggestion that mistakes made during this war were mistakes of incompetence.

Me too.  Using a Lessons Learned to avoid future mistakes in operations is vastly different from blowing up a hut in the desert and and an aspirin factory then claiming it was a total success.

If you all haven't seen this - it's great news. The President will be the FIRST sitting President to visit the US Merchant Marine Academy and is giving the commencement address tomorrow; AND, they're very excited about it :-)

Getting things shipshape
President's planned visit for commencement has U.S. Merchant Marine Academy preparing for larger-than-usual crowd, extra security

BY OLIVIA WINSLOW
Newsday Staff Writer

June 15, 2006

When the president comes calling, the normal way of doing things is supplanted and a big makeover is in order.

That's what the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point is experiencing as it gets ready for a visit Monday by President George W. Bush, who is scheduled to deliver the commencement address to 202 midshipmen, their families, faculty, staff and guests - many, many guests.

Some 4,400 people are registered to attend the ceremony - nearly three times the usual number of around 1,500, said Capt. Eric York Wallischeck, the academy's director of waterfront activities, who has taken on the additional assignment of presidential visit coordinator. Because of security concerns, the academy has the names of every single guest.

"It's a big event for us," Wallischeck said. "I'm honored to be involved and to take it on."

>snip

Bush's scheduled visit also has attracted the attention of the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives, which said in a news release this week two dozen organizations plan to hold a peace vigil Monday "near the academy to send a message to the president: Give the graduates a future without war."

Wallischeck said the president's planned visit would confer on the academy a new level of status, which he likens to that of the Boston Red Sox. Alluding to the team's World Series victory in 2004, its first title since 1918, Wallischeck said, "We're going to be like that now. ... We can put away the 63 years of saying we never had the president."

Bush would be the first sitting president to visit the academy since it was established in 1943, though it has had visits by two men who went on to become president: Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

Numerous government officials have delivered commencement addresses at the college, though, including Bush's former chief of staff Andrew Card, who attended the academy and who personally delivered the news of Bush's visit to the academy's superintendent, Vice Admiral Joseph D. Stewart in March, Wallischeck said.

The reaction on campus? "The place went wild."

Exactly, never mind Clinton gutting the military 50% and this being a different enemy in a new type of war.

Combat Armor is hot. Iraq is an incredibly hot place. It is a trade off, wear the armor and get worn out faster and be slow down or leave off some of the armor to move faster and be more comfortable. Look, ONE of the reasons they go into combat arms is they delusion "Hey, they cannot get me, I am Immortal". Combat solider are not automatically going to use the armor. Not all the armor has been even well designed.

I love some of the crap the supposed "experts" have come up with they want the troops to wear. The helmet with the face guard was absurd. Yeah, wear a Helmet that would totally eliminate any peripheral vision. THAT was a really good idea for combat. NOT.

I have spoken to numerous people who are, or have been, in combat in Iraq. It is not this automatic slam dunk that everyone is going to use the armor. It a trade off. FOR example, they were taking the bleeping doors of Hummers so they could get in and out faster at the same time the Democrats and their pet stooges were ranting about "Unarmored Hummers".

Great analysis... everything they are proposing includes more and more taxes and further flight of jobs out of the country.

Their proposal to make college tuition tax deductible that will only encourage colleges to raise their fees again and again. I do worry that younger voters may buy into it, however.

Don't know about the testimony, but there is a lot more to the story than you include.......The resignation of the prosecutor is very suggestive. .......................................Of course this is all ancient history, since his near indictment for corruption, he has clearly supported clean politics and the national interest (somalia).

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "Murtha was one of eight members of Congress lured to a Washington, D.C., townhouse by a team of FBI agents posing as representatives of a fictitious Arab sheik. They handed out briefcases filled with $50,000 in return for helping the sheik gain residency in the United States."

Noting that Murtha "is not squeaky clean," the Brattleboro, Vt., Reformer reported that the congressman "did not take the cash" offered by the agents. Instead, "he asked the fake sheik to consider investing some money in his struggling home town, Johnstown."

The Washington Post referred to the incident as "an ethical scrape" in which Murtha was "named as an unindicted co-conspirator and testified against two House colleagues."

But, a videotape of a Jan. 7, 1980 Abscam-related meeting involving Murtha shows that the congressman's rejection of the offered bribe was less than definite. "I'm not interested. I'm sorry," Murtha told the FBI agent, but added that he meant "at this point. See Video.

"You know, we do business for a while, maybe I'll be interested, maybe I won't," Murtha said on the FBI videotape.

The congressman told the undercover FBI agent that he was a member of the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct and acknowledged: "If you get into heat with politicians, there's no amount of money that can help."

In November 1980, the Justice Department announced that Murtha would not face prosecution for his part in the scandal. "I did not consider that any money was offered, and certainly none was taken," Murtha told reporters. "The FBI who taped the entire conversation knows damn well no money changed hands."

Eight months later, the House ethics panel also chose not to file charges against the Pennsylvania Democrat.

A July 30, 1981, article in the Washington Post quoted a committee source as saying that several allegations of misconduct against Murtha were rejected on a "near party-line vote." Since the panel was made up of six Democrats and six Republicans, seven votes were needed to file any charges.

Serving on the House panel in 1981 was Rep. Don Bailey (D-Pa.), who told Cybercast News Service that he was responsible for preventing the committee from punishing Murtha. "I saved his (posterior)," Bailey said.

"I worked hard, and I argued," and members of the committee "agreed with me," Bailey stated. "Part of my argument was that the FBI was overdoing it and there wasn't evidence that [Murtha] was doing anything wrong."

In 1982, as a result of congressional redistricting, Murtha and Bailey were forced to run against each other in a Democratic primary. Murtha emerged the winner.

In 2002, Murtha's ethics again became an issue in the congressional election. Bailey issued a public letter, the contents of which have been published on the Internet and confirmed by Bailey. In the letter, Bailey admits that his opinion about Murtha's involvement in Abscam had dramatically changed by 2002.

"I was, to be honest, critical about how you misled me about Abscam where you convinced me you had voluntarily told federal agents about the offer of money to you," Bailey wrote Murtha in the letter.

"I learned later, after I had successfully defeated the ethics charges against you, that you had merely manipulated the system to cooperate with federal agents to avoid prosecution," Bailey added.

On Jan. 9, Bailey told Cybercast News Service that he now believes Murtha was "pretty damn stupid" during the Abscam sting.

"The idea that somebody is going to trot out $50,000 in cash in front of you and you don't know that is wrong is pretty damn stupid to me," Bailey said. "What bankers or investors run around with $50,000 in cash?"

Just hours after the July 1981 House Ethic Committee vote sparing Murtha from charges, E. Barrett Prettyman, Jr., special counsel for the panel's Abscam investigation, abruptly resigned. At the time, Prettyman refused to discuss with the press his reasons for stepping down.

When contacted by Cybercast News Service regarding the investigation, Prettyman called the Murtha situation "very interesting," but declined further comment, citing the need to maintain attorney-client privilege.

Similarly, when Prettyman was interviewed by the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call in 1990, the former special counsel declined to comment on why he had resigned. But when pressed on whether the resignation was due to the Ethics Committee's vote on Murtha, Prettyman said that would be "a logical conclusion."

Well not all the crap the experts come up with are very smart either. The helmet with the face guard was a good example. Yeah, a solider really wants to wear something that eliminates all peripheral vision. Some times the people in combat actually have much better ideas about what works then the Pentagon geniuses.

Interesting stuff. I remember Oswald going to Russia but not that he defected. If so, that would make it even more bizarre.

Oswald's wife was Russian, if I remember right, and there were numerous rumors of her being a spy at the time.
