A few years ago I was at a civil war reenactment here in Jackson Mi. and heard some idiot complain because some of the reenactors were black.

It's not like they have an invalid argument though. Not every black person in Georgia was a slave in 1862.

Actually a better answer would have been field hand, house servant, cook ...or in the case of some slave men, they were trained as blackmiths and carpenters.

Of course they were all slaves.

The irony is that kids are a lot more likely to grasp a simple concept like "pretend" than these PC jackasses.
The kids can figure out, without the condescension, that they are neither slaves nor slavemaster today. If "adults" would simply give them the space to "re-enact".

PC is turning into insanity, reminding one of the old Soviet system and a brave new world.

Disgusting. And have you seen the History Channel lately? Boy, you really have to wade through the PC history to find real stuff. And the film at Monticello was written as if Thomas Jefferson were a liberal democrat of today -- what hogwash. Such idiocy.

Instead of "slave," he should have said "webmaster."

The factually unencumbered, knowledge-based nonpossessor,
selectively perceptive, motivationally dispossessed, uniquely fortuned individual on an alternative career path, at it again.

Reenactors are far better historians than college professors.

I lived in Williamsburg, Virginia for a year (1988-1989)and visited Colonial Williamsburg often (Rockefeller owned). No blacks in "roles". Things changed shortly after that to show a truer picture of the old south.

I must say, the blacks were so kind to me while I was there and treated me with great respect. To that, the southern whites I worked for responded: "They know their place". It was disgusting.

He should have written down "Non Indigenous Involuntary Servitude Individual". The PC crowd would have given him a pass. Of course, the school kid would have had no idea what it was.

So much for free speech in America folks. We can only speak what the liberals deem suitable. They of course may speak as they wish. BTW: What the heck was supposed to be wrong with what he said, and where is the ACLU demanding his rights??

I read through Post 19 and I'll throw in my 2 cents.

Most persons visiting a historic site generally are not aware that some people are in "First Person" while others are not.

Running into someone in "first person" can be somewhat unsettling the first time a visitor tries to make conversation.

Sometimes having a park volunteer, historian or other reenactor explain about that before a visitor hits the first group of "First Person" historians helps a great deal with the "uncomfortable factor".

Then again I've seen some who claimed to be in "First Person" but I thought should have been locked up for being a loon.

Not all Living Historians are equal.

History is a thin membrane separating reality from disaster.

Perhaps a little off topic, but my great-great grandparent's house is located in Crossroads Village.

I have noticed a strange phenomena when it comes to Blacks, history and the movies.

If one selects a place and time in which the odds of seeing a Negro would be maybe less than 1 in a million, there will be some protrayed as being present.

If we are talking 12th century England, 9th Century Scotland, or 10th century BC Greeece, in a movie there will somehow be large numbers of Blacks present.

Now other ethnic groups don't get the same recognition. For instance there will be no American Indians accomanying Jason and the Argonauts. Nor will there be any Japanese included with Robin Hood's Merry Men.

Of course this rule has it's exceptions such as Braveheart.

I dont see what the upset is. Blacks are forever hollering about slavery though none alive today personally remember or experienced it.Its not condoning anything to state that a black would likely have been a slave back in the day. They harp about it constantly themselves. Its not news to anyone, least of all a black person so where is the insult?

"It would have been equally inappropriate to respond 'slave owner' to a Caucasian child who had asked such a question. Had any re-enactor provided such a response, he/she would have also been asked to leave the village."

Liar! She would not have given two hoots if she thought a caucasion might have been upset.

Might Mr. VanRaemdonck be the victim of wild-eyed Dems pursuing more revisionist history to hide a shameful past?
