PUSH seeks boycott of oil giant BP

More minorities on news also urged

Leaders attending the annual Rainbow PUSH Coalition conference on Monday called for a boycott of oil giant BP PLC, a conference sponsor, and for a renewed focus on increasing minority representation on national television news channels, including CNN.

The boycott call is part of an effort to bring together black and Hispanic groups on issues they have in common in the wake of recent immigration controversies. Oil companies' profits and investments must be scrutinized, said Rev. Jesse Jackson, president of PUSH.

"The cost of energy is undermining America's living standards," Jackson said. "That's why we're going to confront British Petroleum, and then on to Exxon and Shell."

In efforts to organize their constituents in the run-up to this fall's elections, Jackson and his allies are "going to focus ... on the energy industry and the media industry," he said.

Jackson made his comments at a news conference on the third day of PUSH's annual weeklong national conference in Rosemont. The conference this year is focused on ways PUSH and its allies believe economic and political equality can be advanced in the United States.

Jackson said BP, which has its North American headquarters in west suburban Warrenville, has a low number of executives and franchisees who are African-American and other minorities. But BP spokesman Scott Dean said Jackson underestimated the number of minorities employed and contracted with the company.

Dean said BP is a sponsor of the PUSH conference for the second year in a row.

LOL! Jackson boycotting a PUSH sponsor!

I can hear the cowering voices at BP already, "Thank you sir! May I have another?!"

BP is probably one of the most "progressive" of the energy companies.

Inside the company they refer to BP as "beyond petroleum."

It's not only inside the company. It's their official slogan in their Ads.

How rare and refreshing for a newspaper to so accurately sum up the situation.

Wonder how much BP paid PUSH to boycott them. A socialist sustainable green company wants to look a little less left wing to America having the Rainbow Coalition boycott them.

Thanks for adding that. I did not know that. I met an employee that talked about some of their ventures, such as buying corn farms in the midwest, to make ethanol.

"Ah, The Irrelevant Jesse Jackson, playing solitaire with a deck of 1 again..."and you know what I'm talkin' about."

I wish he were irrelevant, but he's not. Every time he pulls off this extortion trick, he gets more money, power and the United States' corporate culture gets a little more corrupt. Between providing cover for leftist anti-Anerican tyrants, inflaming our political process, getting his corrupt inner circle on various boards, etc. he's still relevant.

No connection between the two whatsoever. Just more of the Leftist effort to keep the "people" in line by giving them something to blame their troubles on. As a Black man, I publicly denouce this "boycott". It make no sense.

"BP is probably one of the most "progressive" of the energy companies."

That is the impression I have. Several articles I've read makes me think the company leans on the blue side.

Also, I find their commercials highly irritating. "What do you want from an energy company? Cleaner air."

I have noticed Jackson tends to victimize companies that already have strong leftist programs. It's like he's squeezing the golden goose a little more.

His checking account must be getting low. Time to break out the RENT-A-MOB
and extort so more money. The real mystery is why the corporations still fall for his extortion racket.

Only infrequently do I purchase gas at BP, but until the company capitulates I'll make regular stops.

The real mystery is why the corporations still fall for his extortion racket.

In Texaco's case, it had to do with the "black jellie-bean" comment made by one of the senior Texaco execs in reference to a poor strategic plan. It had nothing to do with rascism, but somehow it got out that it was a rascist reference. Texaco wasn't willing to let the incident flare up more than it had, so they paid Jesse extortion money.
