Ann Coulter Was Wrong
Accuracy In Media ^ | 6/13/2006 | Cliff Kincaid

Posted on 06/13/2006 3:02:44 PM PDT by Mike Bates

In the controversy over Ann Coulter's comments about the group of 9/11 widows, there is one critical question, from the point of view of ensuring standards of accuracy in the media. How does Coulter know it to be true that, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much." There is no evidence whatsoever that those women enjoyed their husbands' deaths, and Coulter offers none. The only "evidence" for this preposterous and hurtful claim is that the women became activists and sought the media spotlight and took a political position at odds with that of Coulter. But what does that prove?

I think Coulter probably would have been correct to say that the women appeared to enjoy the media attention. You don't go on these shows unless you enjoy them to some degree. But enjoying a death? And the death of a loved one when fatherless children were left behind? Coulter's comments are not only false but cruel. She has also made other disparaging personal comments about the women.

In journalism, facts and truth are supposed to matter. Opinions are allowed, and Coulter, a columnist for Human Events and many other newspapers, is entitled to her own opinions.

SNIP

If the matter only involved personal opinions about people or things, Coulter's comments wouldn't really be newsworthy or significant. But she is claiming to have inside knowledge of the personal psychology of this group of women who lost their husbands on 9/11. That is why the comments have generated so much outrage—except from a few conservatives unwilling to criticize her.

"If these women were appearing to support the war effort, we'd be lavishing them with praise, and we'd be slamming the DUmmies who attacked them for "standing on their husband's corpses" for political action."

Had these women supported the war we would have never heard of them.

When you have to explain the meaning of a commonly-used and defined word, you've lost the argument.

You should be more niggardly with opinions like that.

ROFL. I should say so.

I suppose now Hugh Hewitt, Cliff Kincaid, Laura Ingraham and I've forgotten how many others will be attacked as not being TRUE conservatives.

Molly isn't being very nice is she? She is telling us to STFU, calling conservatives "wingnuts", "stupid", and "twits". But, Molly is liberal, so its okay.

Have you considered that we expect that kind of poor behavior from liberals. Perhaps we hold ourselves to a higher standard.

At least, we whould.

If Michael Moore had said the same thing abot Lisa Beamer that Ann Coulter said about the Jersey Girls, what would Free Republic have to say about it?

Not quite the same situation, but your point is well made. It is a good question that bears contemplation.

These women were taking advantage of their husband's deaths to gain an advantage in a political debate.

And they sure seem to ENJOY the attention

Coulter is correct.

Exactly. Ann is a bomb-thrower. Its okay to hate her for that. But recognize that if she wasn't out there at point, pushing the line, the Left would be shouting down milder voices than hers. She screws up every now and then, makes a mistake, but she gives the Right space to manuever.

Her point--about the way these women are point out there to spout anti-Bush rhetoric but are unable to be criticized because of their personal loss--is a valid one. But she has no idea about these women "enjoying" their husband's deaths.

Bingo!

I was disappointed in Hewitt for years. Now I no longer am disappointed, because I simply don't expect much from him. I always see him as the person that doesn't want to rattle any cages when it counts. Well, sometimes those cages need to be rattled.

And now I will go make dinner and just say that it's disturbing to see freepers beating up on each other because some of us find her comments over the top and some of us don't.

Freepers used to do something called research into the opposition, not each other.

It will be interesting how Big Media reacts next time some liberal loudmouth like Michael Moore or Alec Baldwin or Howard Dean say something "mean spirited" about a Christian, Conservative or Republican.

Ann may just be setting herself up to scream Liberal Hypocrisy next time Big Media lets one of their own get away with similar or worst verbal assaults.
