PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday in which he was not wearing a helmet.
Four doctors operated on Roethlisberger for seven hours to treat multiple facial fractures and "all of the fractures were successfully repaired," Dr. Harry W. Sell, chairman of the surgery department at Mercy Hospital, told reporters late Monday night.
Dr. Daniel Pituch, who led the team, said Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition, and doctors were aware of no other serious injuries.
"His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury and there are no other confirmed injuries at this time," he said.

Now Ben Roethlisberger and Jack Lambert have more than the same uniform in common...
Hopefully Ben is OK and he gets back on the field at full health ASAP.

Ok they say he wasn't wearing a helmet. He has been quoted as saying he doesn't like to wear a helmet.
But he's a FOOTBALL player. Don't they wear helmets?

Hometown paper report:
7-hour Roethlisberger surgery called success
********************An Excerpt************************
Roethlisberger, who led the Steelers to a Super Bowl championship this year, slammed into the windshield, rolled over the hood of the car and landed on the pavement on his knees, striking his head again, said the witness, who declined to give her name.
She repeatedly asked Roethlisberger who he was and if he was OK.
He eventually replied, "My name is Ben," and asked, "Where am I?"
"You're at the Armstrong Tunnel," the witness said.
"What city is that in?" he said.
"Pittsburgh," the woman replied.
Roethlisberger fell silent briefly and then tried to stand.
"I'm OK," he said.
"No, you're not," said the woman, who instructed him to stay still.

I am a Cowboy's fan and I admire the Steelers and Big Ben...
However, I found him not too mature in his appearances on TV Late Night Shows last year.
Now, his riding a motorcycle without a helmet just proves he still has some growing up to do...
I hope he heals, but I am sure there were very, very few Steeler's fans who did not feel a cold hand clutching their hearts when the news of the accident came out...
Here's hoping the Steeler's coming season isn't on the sick bed, too. I want the Cowboy to beat them in this year's Superbowl...

I guess he only likes to wear a helmet on the football field, and not on motorcycles.
To: Echo Talon
Maybe the helmet reminds him of work.

A lot of people don't like to wear helmets on bikes because they say it ruins the experience of the open road.
To: Echo Talon
Yes, especially the experience of hitting an old lady in a luxury car.

I guess that wouldn't be a very pleasant experience. I'd wear a helmet, I think the pros would far outweigh the cons.
To: Echo Talon
yeah you would think the Pro's would know better.

Yea.
And the coach got all over him last year for not wearing
a helmet.

Only a full face helmet can ward off knocks to the chin.
