Hometown paper report:

7-hour Roethlisberger surgery called success

********************An Excerpt************************

Roethlisberger, who led the Steelers to a Super Bowl championship this year, slammed into the windshield, rolled over the hood of the car and landed on the pavement on his knees, striking his head again, said the witness, who declined to give her name.

She repeatedly asked Roethlisberger who he was and if he was OK.

He eventually replied, "My name is Ben," and asked, "Where am I?"

"You're at the Armstrong Tunnel," the witness said.

"What city is that in?" he said.

"Pittsburgh," the woman replied.

Roethlisberger fell silent briefly and then tried to stand.

"I'm OK," he said.

"No, you're not," said the woman, who instructed him to stay still.

I wasn't at work but a friend who works for another media outlet was on the story and called me to fill me in. The >very early< report she had mentioned his broken jaw, fractured left sinus and both his knees broken. That's actually not the word she used to describe the knees, it was a lot worse.

Her info claimed he hit the left side of the car, went over the handlebars of his crotch rocket, hit the left side of his head on the windshield, bounced and landed on the pavement on his knees.

Thing is that was a preliminary report, and in the life cycle of a story that's when you get a lot of conflicting and usually wrong info. So I'm not saying that's what happened but it is what was coming into our newsroom initially.

I do find it curious though the way the stories are being worded... "no other injuries at this time" ...phrases like that.

My guess is they're spending a lot of time evaluating his situtation. Being as young as he is if it's just the injuries they're reporting now, he'll probably be ok by fall, at least for some action.

Last fall I was geocaching with my 15 year old son and took a header off a 15 foot wall onto an asphalt parking lot. I managed to twist and keep my head from hitting first but my right shoulder took the impact. Busted it up pretty good.

That was in the first week of October and it took me about 5 months to even begin to be able to use it normally. But as I mentioned I'm twice Ben's age so He'll probably be OK.

Let's hope.

BTW, Roethlisberger is an idiot. He failed to recognize and account for the single most prevalent threat facing motorcyclists today; an inattentive driver turning left in front of him.

This accident will trigger yet another raging debate on Pennsylvania's helmet law, with the Nanny Staters employing all manner of twisted statistics and cannon fodder leaps of logic to curtail the right to decide for yourself. Impassioned commercials pleading for donor card registration will be seen nationwide replete with blurry emergency room scenes filled with blood and beeping. Insurance agents will surf the groundswell of popular opinion to higher premiums for 'risky' behaviors. We'll be bored to tears with yet another 'Gary Busey' epiphany as Roethlisberger hits the talk-show scene and regales the breathless crowd with the tale of his moment.

Way to go, Ben. You single-handedly managed to push motorcycling back ten years. Moron.
