PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday in which he was not wearing a helmet.

Four doctors operated on Roethlisberger for seven hours to treat multiple facial fractures and "all of the fractures were successfully repaired," Dr. Harry W. Sell, chairman of the surgery department at Mercy Hospital, told reporters late Monday night.

Dr. Daniel Pituch, who led the team, said Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition, and doctors were aware of no other serious injuries.

"His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury and there are no other confirmed injuries at this time," he said.

The same can be said every time I see a fata$$ pigging out at the buffet. There are far more in that category than in the helmetless-rider category. Maybe you should worry about them instead.

Cool you jets junior. I got 44 yrs riding legally on the streets and 25 yrs experience in the industry and I do know what I am talking about.
According to the local cop shop here, of the 12 fatal motorcycle accidents here, 8 were cruiser (ahem, that includes Harleys) with riders 30 yrs. or older not wearing helments. Their crashes were either with another vehicle or non-impact ie driving by themselves in the boonies.
The other 4 were sport bike riders, under 30 and two were wearing helments and they were killed riding excessive speeds.(100 mph plus.

Obviously you don't know that people with severe head injuries but no others are prime organ donors. When the victims family finally gives the go ahead to pull the plug then the harvesting begins, with family permission of course.

KFFL has an update on Roethlisburger's condition - upgraded from serious but stable to fair condition.

I do not know if this status update reflects on his cognitive ability or if it only reflects physical condition.

No matter how well he's patched back together, could someone who has been through such injuries ever be "good as new"?

Thanks for the concern.

Statistically, though, is the ratio of motorcycle riders to automobile riders - one to one hundred?

I would have to know that to see the implication of the statistic you quote.

Very nice chatting with you.

A $50 helmet to protect a $5 brain.

Wow. That is harsh. But cops see more wrecks than most of us.

I do worry about them, too. It's true many modern people are digging themselves into an early grave with their forks. Food addicts are everywhere.

But I don't think that will inspire me to go hop on a motorcycle without a helmet.

Sigh. Such a risk.

Just yesterday driving home from work, I saw a man and woman riding on one motorcycle, helmetless. They looked like they were in their early 30s.

I looked at them and hoped they didn't have little kids at home waiting for Daddy and Mommy to safely arrive home from their late afternoon ride through rush hour traffic.

It seem Ben was riding a Suzuki Hayabusa- one of the fastest stock motorcycles in the world- but without a helmet. He also didn't have a PA motorcycle license, according to some reports.

Hmm, thats funny.

My 16 year old son died from the head injuries he received in an automobile accident a year ago. We were informed he could not be considered for organ donations because of the head injuries he received, even though he was young, strong and fit as a rail.

They did harvest his skin and bones, via the legs and arms; there were prostetics in place in the casket.

I guess I should have talked to you first . . .

Hi rintense, thanks for the info.

Did I hear that he is 24?

Being twice as old as he is, my perspective is that someone his age still has plenty of growing up to do.

Such impulsivity. Such high-risk behavior. Such poor stewardship of his money, his talents, his body.

Such disregard for the good faith and reliance his team and fans placed on him.

But we were all young and foolish once.

I hope and pray he knows only godly sorrow that leads to repentance.

Thanks again,
jm

What mystifies me is that he was doing this in city traffic. I sort of understand the 'wind in the hair' thing, but how do you get that 'Easy Rider' feeling in an urban setting? I gave up riding when the idiots started outnumbering the careful drivers.

Good point.

He's 24.

OK, so when he's on the football field, he thinks about what he's doing.

That doesn't mean he bothers with such when he's off the field.

Champion football player morphs into stupid kid.

I hope for the best for him.
