The dinner party had gathered last Wednesday evening in a farmhouse in the fertile, fruit-growing countryside just outside Baqubah, 30 miles north of Baghdad. One of the attendees was Abu Mousab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq. With him were at least three women and three men, including Sheik Abdul-Rahman, al-Zarqawi's so-called spiritual adviser and confidant. Also in the house was one of al-Zarqawi's most trusted couriers, an aide tasked with relaying messages from the commander to militants in the field. What al-Zarqawi could not have known was that U.S. and Jordanian intelligence officials had been tracking the movements of Abdul-Rahman and the courier--whom Jordanian intelligence refers to as Mr. X--for weeks. Fewer than half a dozen members of a U.S. reconnaissance and surveillance team from Delta Force hid in a grove of date and palm trees, watching the building. After years of hunting, they finally had the prey in their sights.
But almost as soon as they took up position, the commandos feared they were about to lose him. A special-operations source tells TIME that the surveillance team was worried that there wasn't enough time to assemble a ground assault force to raid the house and capture al-Zarqawi; the commandos at the site lacked sufficient manpower and weaponry to attack on their own. As dusk neared, the team fretted al-Zarqawi might slip away if they waited too long. A knowledgeable Pentagon official says the Delta team "saw one group come into the house and one group exit." Al-Zarqawi was not in the departing group, but the commandos were afraid he might be in the next one. The recon unit's leader radioed his superiors to request an air strike.

At least one mistake here... 6 people total, including the butcher were killed...
Who cares? He's DEAD! And that's all that matters.
Sounds like he was getting a head start on the 70 virgins.
Speaking of pedophiles I read somewhere that the Jordanian who had the 16 year old from Michigan go looking for him, now says he wants her to return to Jordan. He says she "belongs" to him.
A treacherous arab, now that's a surprise.
Words escape me, pervert, butcher, scum bag. All fit. I am glad he is dead.
How nice for Zaqcowee. His sixteen year old wife is dead, and her happiness can be derived from knowing that he'll get 72 virgins. No wonder these Moslems don't want anything to do with pigs. They recognize each other for what they are, and want no part of it.
Interesting how the NY Times in their story today left out the fact that Zarqawi's wife was 16-years old. But the NY Times has always been a champion of perversion and pedophilia.
I thought he had a wife and four kids back in Jordan in his home town?
this 16 yr old must have been a 2nd wife.
LOL, for sure!
That Delta Team did a perfect job. And who ever were with the low life serial killer were with him at their own risk. He was a very high value target, they knew it and were still with him. TO BAD...shows how ignorant they were. NOW THEY'RE ALL DEAD...just more terrorist dead that will not have to be dealt with. GREAT JOB...DELTA!!!
Now we know why the liberal media has been quiet about the reports of women's lingerie being discovered in the ruins of his former "safe" house. What a sicko.
Dinner party. ok.
More info Bump!!!!!!!!!
Targeted by The United States Army, engaged by the United States Air Force.
If only we could bring the team (USA and USAAF) back together again ;)
Good for the ops team but I'd like to know who the "Special Ops" source was for TIME?????
I can't see anyone being directly involved in this quickie kill turning around and phoning his buddy at TIME!
Is there any silence these days or are there press shills in every mission.
The army said that 6 people, Zarkawi included, were killed... This report says that 7 were...
Maybe try to read and understand first?
