Yesterday, President Bush was more popular than he's been all year.
The president's lagging poll numbers got a swift boost in overnight tracking surveys from Thursday's news that United States warplanes had killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the most wanted terrorist in Iraq.
Polling done on Thursday night for the IBD/TIPP Presidential Leadership Index gave George W. Bush a 44.2 rating, up from 39.1 on the first of June and 38.9 in May.
The last time the index reached this level was in December 2005, when it hit 44.3 The complete June index with be released on Tuesday.
Raghavan Mayur, president of TIPP, said the sudden rise in sentiment on a range of issues, including Americas standing in the world suggests that the Bush bounce is 'totally attributable' to Zarqawi.
Larry Sabato, director for the University of Vrigina's Center of Politics, thinks that there could be more behind the rise in Bush's ratings than just Zarqawi.
'It was the best week Bush has had since his second inauguaration,' he said.
Republican candidate Brian Billbray won a contrested California special election in the US House, and Congress was focused on 'issues that help Republicans' like gay marriage and the estate tax.

And he'd still beat Kerry if the election were today!
Ok, if they typically oversample Dem's by 6% does that mean he probably more at 50%? Food for thought.....
Oh boy, somebody better put DU on suicide watch....they aren't going to be happy about this!
And Bush still doesn't care about his approval rating. He's not personally ever going to run for political office again. Nice to have a president who doesn't govern according to the polls.
Zar-cow-wee's fault! ;-)
44.2 and climbing! :)
Pelosi, Kerry, Reid, and Murtha may all be stopping by Teddy's Bar & Grill for a stiff one with Ted!
This is exactly what the Left feared. They were making such good progress with the Haditha thing and all. And now Bush goes and blows it by doing something right again! At this rate, they'll NEVER be able to pull off another Viet Nam.
This is good news for November, I think Snowman can keep this positive trend going.
Yep, like ol' "Give 'em Hell, Harry".
Truman was despised his last years in office and for several years thereafter.
But then, as historians rather than "reporters" started reviewing Truman in his historical place, he started looking better and better.
And, the historians give him credit for Threatening a reporter who wrote nasty things about his daughter.
Can you imagine what the response would be if a a reporter were to write nasty things about Jena or Barbara and GW said what Truman said?
Bush needs to govern for tomorrow regardless of polls and that means put up a fence!
The more you whack, the higher your score is.
Good news in Iraq = Good news for GWB = Bad news for dems.
Therefor Good news in Iraq = Bad news for dems.
The math is so simple. DEMS NEED US TO LOOSE IN IRAQ!
Nothing could be more obvious. To assume they have any other
focus is absurd. They don't have a BETTER way or RIGHT way
to get the job done. They just desperately want to make sure
GWB gets NO credit for doing the job.
So we get another 6 points for one eyed Mullah Omar?
Damn, damn, damn! This can't be true! He hasn't met our demands yet!
That's an 11-point jump, proving how worthless the polls having him at 33% were in the first place.
Some actually believe that Z-man was kept in cold storage and then resurrected to restore sagging poll numbers.
Wait a minute! Zarq WAS red-headed wasn't he? Doesn't this give new meaning to the term, "Beaten like a red-headed stepchild?"
