A black bear clings to a backyard tree in West Milford, N.J., Sunday, June 4, 2006. Jack, a 15-pound orange-and-white cat, chased the bear up another nearby tree after it climbed down from the one it first was in. SUZANNE GIOVANETTI
WEST MILFORD, N.J. - A black bear picked the wrong New Jersey yard for a jaunt earlier this week, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree - twice.
Jack, a 15-pound orange-and-white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, chasing small animals when he can, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising.
"We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear," cat owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's newspapers.
Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey home's back yard on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat.
After about 15 minutes peering down at the cat from the tree, the bear descended and tried to run away, only to have Jack chase it up another tree.
At this point Dickey, who feared for her cat, called Jack back home and the bear scurried back to the woods.
"He doesn't want anybody in his yard," Dickey said.
Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state's most bear-populated areas.

Can one your cats do this trick??
Impressive. Sounds like we might need to fit Jack out for his horned helmet and wooden shield. Since he's been de-clawed he'll need a battle axe as well.

Missed it in the search.
the funny thing is, the cat doesn't know he is de-clawed.
My mom had a cat that would chase off foxes but I don't think he'd have taken on a bear. Now if that bear had tried to make off with his kitty snacks - that would have been a different story.
Ponder this..... humans pretty much keep ONLY carnivores as household pets. What would the aliens think?

I had a cat that was that protective. She was a rescue and was always was trying to pay me back for it. I loved her dearly.
Nope. The funny thing is the bear doesn't know the cat's de-clawed.
Except for gerbils, hamsters, mice, rats, birds, rabbits, ducks, chickens, etc. Yes, I've seen chickens as pets, makes no sense to me though.
One day, I had annoyed him, somehow, (grumpy old fart) and he punched me with his clawless paw. It hurt. He weighed about 18 lbs. Big old grumpy siamese. I miss him.

Calico hamster ate my kidney...
And then there is this brave little cat.....
"Who are YOU?"
It's good to be the leading omnivore on the planet, to have dominion over every creature that walks, flies, crawls or swims, To drive their women and children before us, and hear their lamentations.... Oops.. got carried away, that last was the muzzies.
