Sorry, I'm going to have to agree with the caller on this one. I'm basically independent / conservative, and like most people on this forum, a big part of that is thinking for myself. But the sad fact is that most people would rather chew glass than use their brains, and are perfectly willing to indenture themselves to anybody who will do their thinking for them.

That post led me to that conclusion. Others seem to have seen it as well. So you just repudiated it (I think) and it's on to the next thing.

I would bet that the schools doesn't have much of a recess, probably just standing around and talking so nobody gets hurt. The same thing with PE, if they still have it. All this touchy feely stuff, don't want anybody to be the slowest, so they don't run anymore, no more gymnastics etc. The schools have demonized competition and they don't allow physical activity. When they get home its the same thing, sit at the computer or play video games. All three of my boys play sports and are active. I've had many parents say to me they could never do the sports like we do because its too time consuming. Do they eat junk food, heck yeah, I should buy stock in Little Debbies for my oldest son, my middle prefers meat and fruit, my youngest a mix. Take your kids out bike riding, rollerblading, get them off their butts and away from the t.v.

Good for you! I taught my daughter to bake early on. Teachers kept telling me that they thought she should be tested for hyperactivity--forget the PC name for it. I just tried to keep her busy. Whenever she got too ansy, she would go in and bake. I enjoyed seeing her turn her energy to something constructive. But she never learned what your kids are learning. I think it's great! And she and her friend will have such pride in knowing that they can do things well that has significance for them and their families. Talk about self esteem! That was never an issue when kids were given tasks that their families depended on! I know that you aren't "depending" on your daughter, but she is doing something that contributes to the health and well being for her family. Pretty head stuff, actually!
That sentence tells you all you need to know about obesity in children.. notice how this mother didn't say "fast food is an option".. she said it is "THE" option.
Its not, you can be on the run constantly and still provide good nitritious meals, you just have to make the conscious effort to do so.
Can a school on school grounds ban certain foods? I don't see a reason why not... some may not like it, but in that limited context I see no large problem with it.

I have four kids. Only one of them had an after-school activity. That was twice a week for a half hour. The oldest has band, but that is mostly during school hours. That's it.
There is barely enough time for homework and baths when they get out of school at 4.
We have no organized activities during the summer, except for Vacation Bible School. We may add piano/guitar lessons or gymnastics next year so it may be a bit busier, but I am determined to keep our lives from being too hectic.

I don't know about your school; but my comments were mostly referencing gym and recess. I have 3 kids. They each have gym once every 6 days.
Gym use to be a daily class.
