WASHINGTON, June 6, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The U.S. Senate will vote this week on the Marriage Protection Amendment, a bill which defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. Senator Edward M. Kennedy was quoted today as saying, "A vote for this amendment is a vote for bigotry pure and simple."
Kennedy, who claims to be Catholic while opposing the Church on every major tenet of morality, was blasted by Catholic League president Bill Donohue.
"A vote for the Marriage Protection Amendment is a vote to maintain the traditional understanding of marriage as it has been accepted for thousands of years all over the world," said Donohue. "To brand those who support this amendment as bigots is mud-slinging: it is analogous to those who would call foes of the amendment 'gay lovers.'"
Donohue recalled that in 1996, President Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act which denies federal recognition to same-sex marriages and allows states the right to deny recognition of gay marriages that have been performed in other states. "Only 14 senators voted against this bill, and Senator Kennedy was one of them," Donohue pointed out. "Thus, his proclaimed opposition to gay marriage is nothing but an empty gesture: he refuses to do anything that would protect the institution of marriage from legislative or judicial tinkering."
Donohue also noted the public support for the measure. "In the last election, all 11 states that had same-sex marriage on the ballot voted against it, including states with a 'progressive' reputation like Oregon," he said. "Moreover, more than 80 percent of the states have passed Defense of Marriage Acts."
Donohue reminded Kennedy the "Catholic" that "the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is in favor of a constitutional amendment." He also noted that "Black ministers, like Bishop Harry Jackson of the High Impact Leadership Coalition, have rallied in favor of the amendment. Even in New York City, surveys show the people don't want same-sex marriage."
Concluding Donohue asked, "Are all these people bigots, Mr. Kennedy?" He answered the rhetorical question, saying: "Reasonable people may disagree whether a constitutional amendment is the right remedy, but only fanatics will call those who support it bigots."
(Maybe it is time the Catholic Church excommunicates Ted)
Quiet! It is people like Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy that is helping to keep more and more conservative politicians in power as rank and file Democratics get more and more fed up with their party.
After all, it was President Bill Clinton that helped elect a Republican majority in the House and Senate.
Just make sure Ted has plenty of his father's bootleg liquor for him to drink, and the words from Ted Kennedy's mouth will help preserve the American way of life...
(I am sure many Gay voters love Ted -- in more ways than one -- for his stand on Gay rights...)
Yeah, but this is an issue for the states. This is a political ploy pure and simple. There are more important issues than this and flag burning at the moment and I really wonder if the target audience is the same who would have been thrilled by their $100 gas rebate check.
Kennedy is just playing along. We should be thankful for him.
Is there really any mystery to why this family is cursed.
Cursed? We're the ones who are cursed...with them.
:(
And the state legislatures can vote to reject or ratify such an Amendment...
Are you afraid of how the states will vote?
Well, of course he would say that. How many of the kennedys have managed to stay faithful even to one wife. And I can't help but think, there may be more than women hiding in their closets.
Well, that is certainly one fairly commonly stated view. Even if one were to agree, the problem is not what transpires in the states but what transpires in the hands of activist judges who decide it's within their discretion to toss out the will of the people to promote their personal political agendas. If there weren't activist judges I'd bet this wouldn't be on the front pages today.
Your words ring true even though they may be laced with a tinge of sarcasm.
Case in point: just when I think I'm done with the Republican party, I simply take a trip to the online forum populated by alumni of my university. The vitriol and hyperbole displayed towards those not on the left has been illustrative for me.
Like Teddy, these folks are helping to keep conservatives in power.
Man...what is it with Kennedys?
First, if you are for enforcing the nation's borders, Kennedy says you are a bigot and racist.
Then, Patrick the Boozer wants to be treated "like a black person," albeit he is treated like royalty for his DUI and crash.
Now, this.
I guess if you are one of the democrat aristocracy, or just Senate royal, you can regurgitate any old soundbite and get away with it.
The racist, bigot charge just shows a complete and utter vacuity of mind and intellect.
I disagree with you here. IMHO, it's just a matter of time before some judge declares that all the states have to accept gay "marriage" and the Supreme Court may not overturn that ruling.
That's precisely right. Congress should send the proposed amendment to the states and let them dispose of it as they will. Those who oppose the passage of this amendment by the Congress are opposing state legislative decision on the matter. And it is one matter, nationwide, due to "full faith and credit" nationwide.
This is what Ted Kennedy needs on live TV. Public humiliation based on moral clarity. I would imagine this Pope would do it, too, knowing that he must know well of Kennedy's abortion and gay positions as a public official.
Everything to the Swimmer is pure and simple including his drinks. (Scotch on the rocks)
