Another Terrorist Attack Coming Soon?
CBS News ^ | June 5, 2006

Posted on 06/05/2006 4:14:43 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

U.S. officials believe Canadian arrests over the weekend and three recent domestic incidents in the United States are evidence the U.S. will soon be hit again by a terrorist attack. Privately, they say, they'd be surprised if it didn't come by the end of the year, reports CBS News correspondent Jim Stewart.

The first of the domestic incidents, all of which drew little attention at the time, began with the holdup of a string of Torrance, Calif. gas stations last summer. Muslim converts who bonded together in prison planned to use the robberies to finance attacks on 20 Army recruiting stations.

Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton admits they stumbled on the plot during a search.

"Make no mistake about it," Bratton said. "We dodged a bullet here — perhaps many bullets."

Police in Toledo, Ohio, busted another cell in February. This one consisted of three men training to attack U.S. forces overseas. Once again, luck played a role. When they tried to enlist someone in their mosque to help, he turned them in.

"These individuals are often hiding in plain sight in cities like Torrance and now Toledo," says John Pistole, a FBI deputy director.

Two months ago, a pair of Atlanta men, one a Georgia Tech engineering student, were arrested not long after communicating by e-mail with two of the suspects arrested in Canada over the weekend. The Atlanta men are charged with videotaping domestic targets, including the U.S. Capitol and the World Bank.

Analysts now conclude similarities between all the cases were dramatic: All were self-financed, self-motivated, and in each case the men were seeking out others to join their cell.

In short, Osama bin Laden didn't pay for these plots, recruit for them or even know of them. They were all totally homegrown — even amateurish. But if four, including the one in Canada, have been uncovered in just 11 months, officials fear there are inevitably other plots that have not been and are maturing even now.

The next attack here, officials predict, will bear no resemblance to Sept. 11. The casualty toll will not be that high, the target probably not that big. We may not even recognize it for what it is at first, they say. But it's coming — of that they seem certain.

Well put. If we as Americans would not respond to this kind of demagoguery put out by the Democrats and the far left about wiretapping, the Patriot Act, etc. they would not feel they could use these things to beat the president over the head with. Instead, we have a media culture that feels no shame or pressure to NOT refrain from publishing sensitive national security information like the NSA wiretaps, so they get away with it. People will still buy their papers and still reflexively vote for the Democratic politicians who use these important national security programs as political fodder to attack the president with and make not so subtle implications they'll impeach the president if put in control of congress. Yet Americans say they'll elect those people to control Congress in the fall, while punishing the president and his party who implemented these protections. As you say, I'm disappointed in us. I never thought I'd see the country turn against the president and all he's done to take on our enemies after what we all witnessed on that terrible day in September nearly 5 years ago. Unfortunately I over-estimated my fellow citizens.

This is a first! A moderate Muslim who goes to the authorities to turn in the terrorists in his mosque. I can't recall anything like this happening before.

Those terrorists are really just misunderstood. The New York Times recently conducted an interview with author John Updike about his newest novel. This interview was revealing of why liberals will never understand this age in which we live. It is indicative of how they just don’t understand the evil we face in Islamofacism. (See story - Click here) Updike, as obsessed with fallen Christianity as he is with prurient sex scenes, must have seen the writing on the wall while in the midst of penning his newest novel, a sort of Thriller titled ”Terrorist”. The plot of Updike’s new novel...

...until we have won the war, and that may take 50 years...

It may well take centuries.

I'm not sure I really take the word of a Pakistani journalist seriously. I don't know why they'd be waiting for a "massacre of Muslims" to act if they really have a cell here capable of taking action. That's not to say we shouldn't take the threat of terrorism seriously. We should. It's just to say we shouldn't take the bloviating of Al Qaeda vermin and their stooges in the Islamic press overly seriously.

"have a media culture that feels no shame or pressure to NOT refrain from publishing sensitive national security information like the NSA"

To refrain from I meant. Remove the "not."

CBS revving up its engines to blame Bush.

They're so sneaky, they didn't even mention him.

Scary. Thanks for the link.

I have simply come to believe that being a modern-day liberal IS satire in and of itself. It can not be explained otherwise in my opinion.

I always thought a suicide bomber at the food court in the mall would be next. Some muslim yo-yo screaming, "Allah Akbar!" before detonating himself..

Heck, I don't let our gas tanks get below 1/2 tank, either...and keep six weeks' worth of food and water on hand, as well.

Perhaps, but there is a sort of (very) twisted morality in the way bin Laden operates. He understood that Zarqawi's targeting of innocent Muslim civilians in Lebanon and the Beslan massacre of children did nothing to help his cause.

He has played by the (muslim) rules of offering a truce for those who accept Islam.

If there IS another sleeper cell in the US, there must be a reason that they are waiting.

Waiting for a "justification" seems to me as good a reason as any.

cBS may be planning to blame W, but we have been told, over and over, it is a matter of 'when', not 'if'.

Another OKC-like attack, car bomb, homicide bomber in a mall - any and all are liikely. The drive-by media is ramping it up.

I have been truly stunned at how many people refuse to back up and see the bigger picture. Things are much clearer from a distance.

Fortunately, my tinfoil hat is firmly in place and I think that many around here are simply disruptors. Some have never been supporters.

I still believe that come November there are going to be a lot of "What the....." on the lips of the naysayers.

In one sense, the return to 'normalcy' was needed for the economy. 9/11 was a huge hit, and some repercussions are still being felt - e.g., the airplane industry.

The libs are aiding it by refusing to help with oil and refineries.

We may not even recognize it for what it is at first, they say.

Like when someone in the name of Allah drives a motor vehcle through a crowd of colleges students at a prestigious university in North Carolina?

Quite honestly, The Dems have offered zero in the way of policy.

Its hard to imagine that they can win on naysaying alone.

For all the critisism, I actually see this administration rolling up its sleeves and getting dirty

Something tells you the Dems. in all their over-confidence may again be in for another disappointment in November, so you may be right. But I prefer to have GOP candidates all running as if they're 5 points behind and the Dems. thinking it's a lock for them. Our worry will motivate our side, and their overconfidence will make their's sloppy.
