RSN: Canada Arrests 17 in Terror Sweep, The 17 may have had contacts in the US.--A very good story about this is here:
http://tinyurl.com/oeyng
There is MUCH more information in this story by reporter MICHELLE SHEPHARD by 1AM this morning. It seems she had foreknowledge of this bust and kept her mouth shut.

http://www.instapundit.com/
A TERROR RING THAT PLANNED OKLAHOMA-CITY-STYLE BOMBINGS has reportedly been smashed in Canada. Interestingly, it seems that Internet monitoring played a key role.
UPDATE: Brendan Loy has more, plus a complaint about Reuters' coverage, which leaves out a lot of details about the Islamist character of the defendants:

Terror Cell Apprehended

(bumped to top with updates)

Toronto Sun;

Any guesses at how long it takes the usual suspects to a) downplay the story as much ado about nothing, and/or b) weave it into a conspiracy to turn Canada into Shrubhitler's police state. Update; It's already begun.

A news conference will begin shortly. You can listen live at 650 CKOM.

Stephen Taylor has lots more, including a chilling poem from one of the suspects.

Terror raids in Canada, too

Those arrested are "Muslims, but not Arabs." It's nice to see the mainstream media actually making this elementary distinction, which might begin to dispel the calumny that the anti-jihad resistance is "racism."Comments (45)

The National Post also took a look at the Georgia-Canada connection in Terrorism’s ‘new guard’, published first on May 4, 2006.

Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, 19, and Syed Haris Ahmed, 21, are accused of traveling [sic] to Canada last March for “terrorism-related planning and co-ordination” with local radicals.

The NYT has some interesting info tucked away in its report about the arrests. Apparently the Toronto jihadis may have been in contact with some Georgia jihadis:

http://tinyurl.com/zbsz3

This, of course, is not the first time Sadequee and Ahmed have appeared in news items at Jihad Watch: ttp://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/011656.php   Comments (38)  "They include men of Somali, Egyptian, Jamaican, and Trinidadian origin. All are residents of Canada and “for the most part” all are Canadian citizens, police said."

"Hopefully some taboo topics will be opened. Like open borders. Immigration by Muslims etc., and not a second too late."

As Dan Riehl notes, there is a possible link between the Canadian arrests and two recently indicted jihadi suspects in Georgia. Blogged about them last month:

Massive Terror Attack? Connect the Dots

It appears that there is a global web of terror tied to this most recent bust of  17 Canadian Muslims and the "dirty bomb" bust in London. The weaponry found in these raids are WMD, weapons of mass destruction. Big time. Before these recent raids, there were at least 18 related arrests already taken place in Canada, the United States, Britain, Bosnia, Denmark, Sweden, and Bangladesh. Broad Strata?

The politically-correct whitewash of the Canadian terror cell has already begun in earnest. The Globe & Mail reports that the RCMP has decided to emphasize the fact that the suspected terrorists came from a "broad strata" of Canadian society:...The majority sported the traditional Muslim male beard. [emphasis mine -- CE]

EUPHEMISM O' THE DAY: "BROAD STRATA"
By Michelle Malkin   ·   June 03, 2006 10:18 PM

Oh, dear Lord. A jihadist plot, possibly of global scale, possibly imminent, unravels in Canada...and what do law enforcement officials do? Try to whitewash the obvious jihadi profile from the public's mind.At the press briefing held by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police today, the suspects who appeared in court--all sporting traditional Muslim male beards and requesting Korans--were described as coming from a "broad strata" of society. (Hat tip: reader Ed)

Broad strata.

Yes, the same "broad strata" from which the 9/11 hijackers, 1993 World Trade Center bombers, USS Cole bombers, etc., etc., etc., came.

Allah looks at the "broad strata" of jihadi suspects netted in Toronto who are neither poor nor uneducated nor disenfranchised.

In fact it takes them six paragraphs before they even name any names. And of course they hasten first to make sure we know most of these men (not yet identified as Islamists) are "young people," shades of the French linguistic obsession with les jeunes, lest we might think them representative of a hostile ideology. This political bowdlerization is accomplished in paragraph four. Think for a moment how the Times would have constructed an article (has constructed many articles) about the malfeasance of US servicemen. They sure wouldn't bury the lede."

Europe faces a similar situation, and now the question will be whether the US has something brewing in its mosques as well. Contrary to the official explanation, there is a strong indication that the explosive substance TATP (triacetone triperoxide), also known as the Mother of Satan and a homemade and very unstable explosive was used in this blast. Hmmm...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhenium

"Rhenium is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Re and atomic number 75. A silvery-white, rare, heavy, polyvalent transition metal, rhenium resembles manganese chemically and is used in some alloys. Rhenium is obtained as a by-product of molybdenum refinement and rhenium-molybdenum alloys are superconducting. This was the last naturally-occurring element to be discovered and belongs to the ten most expensive metals on Earth."

Almost had me hunting a 45 year old copy of "Elements of Chemistry," you did.

Hmmm... food for thought- some of the restrooms we have in the states have exhaust systems that sound like they are sucking up half the air in the world- he might have thought that would minimize the chances of the smell giving him away.

And that's the key, 'the story is'. I wonder, would a floor plan of the Horton's and the time of detonation be important to sorting this out? It has happened here in the deep South that a 'fry station' under an industrial hood was used to cook up Meth during 'store closed' hours. Some explosives have poisonous gases as by products during 'cooking'.

Not familiar with Horton's here in the South. Thanks for the info. Regarding the explosive, From Wikipedia: "It is widely used by people who want to make homemade explosives because of its low cost and ease of manufacture. They often have no idea of its extreme sensitivity, or they make it anyway solely because it's cheap and can be made in a refrigerator. There is a common myth that the only "safe" acetone peroxide is the trimer, made at low temperatures: "If one is making tricycloacetone peroxide, the temperature must be less than 10 °C at all times, otherwise the product formed will be dicycloacetone peroxide, which is so unstable and sensitive that it has no uses in the field of explosives: dicycloacetone peroxide has been known to explode spontaneously." In reality, the acid-catalyzed peroxidation of acetone always produces a mixture of dimeric and trimeric forms. The trimer is the more stable form, but not much more so than the dimer. All forms of acetone peroxide are very sensitive to initiation. Organic peroxides are sensitive, dangerous explosives. The military does not use them because there are many much better alternatives. Even for people who synthesize homemade explosives, there are many far safer alternatives. Even nitroglycerin is not nearly as sensitive as acetone peroxide."

"It is also a hazardous by-product of isosafrole oxidation in acetone, a step in illicit synthesis of MDMA."

Was the major of one of the GT students 'chemistry'?

Can someone please tell me why our government refuses to order drugs that will safeguard our citizens against a nuclear or dirty bomb attack? Health and Human Services wants to order up to 100,000 doses of anti Radiation drugs. Anthony Fauci is the most corrupt official in DC to come up with that amount. Terrorists in Canada

Posted on June 3rd, 2006 at 12:24 pm by Meryl Yourish.

Do you think it’s time we stopped discussing root causes? Because the last time I checked, Canada was an obnoxiously multiculti, socialist-oriented nation replete with national healthcare and hate speech laws.

That didn’t seem to stop them from having several cells of homegrown terrorists try to blow up Canadian civilians. Why? Gee. Every one of the arrestees was Muslim. Can you think of a reason?

...

So let’s check the tally. Jihadis in London arrested yesterday. Jihadis in Canada arrested today.

Does anyone doubt that we are truly in a global terrorist war? WWIV has been ongoing since before 9/11, but 9/11 was the day it was announced to the world.

We have a long way to go. And the Cindy Sheehans of the world are not helping.

Update: It’s a worldwide terrorist conspiracy. No joke. Click the link. There are ties to terrorism arrests in United States, Britain, Bosnia, Denmark, Sweden, and Bangladesh.

Say hello to WWIV.

"It was not clear whether the group ever had possession of the chemicals. When a police spokeswoman, Cpl. Michele Paradis, was asked whether the group had the three tons of chemicals in their possession and if the police had “seized” it, she replied: “That's difficult to answer. They made arrangements to have it delivered and they took delivery.”

Good catch. That much fertilizer takes up a fair amount of space and the mixing process requires a larger area of operations in order to bring the fuel and fert together for mixing. Perhaps the bags or bulk of fert were delivered to a farm or large storage facility. I'm wondering if some transportation arrangements were made that could have allowed explosives to enter the USA and be 'trucked' to parts unknown!

Kind of far-fetched to think that the cops did a great job chasing them down for months, then somehow were incompetant enough let them get ahold of a few truckloads of the final piece, and don't know what happened to it.

That "hard to answer" answer seems like she didn't want to stomp on the bosses toes when in his press conference he made it seem as if these guys were set to light the fuses.
