The left figure shows the electoral breakdown for 2004 national legislative election in northern part of Seoul. The ruling party did particularly well in this part of Seoul. Yellow represents the ruling party's gain and blue, the conservative opposition. In that contest, two thirds of legislative districts in entire Seoul went for the ruling party. Legislative districts are subdivision of an administrative district. The right figures show administrative districts which went for the opposition in Seoul's mayoral contest. The average margin for victory is over 2:1 in favor of the conservative opposition. Additionally, the opposition had the clean sweep of all 25 District Chiefs. The ruling party got none.

Hardcore: Min-no-chong: the umbrella group of militant left-wing unions - controls major TV media, middle/high schools. Left-wing academics, and leftwing-dominated entertainment industry. Militant student organization Small dedicated professional revolutionaries, controlling many civic groups, NGO's. Many junior members and some senior members in ruling party and Democratic Labor Party.

Softcore: garden-variety useful idiots who think that it is passe to view N. Koreans as commies or guard against N. Korea, and maintain good relationship with Americans. They are mostly into this because it is an in-thing at the moment. Their view are not well thought-out. It is a bunch of vague sentiments and perceptions fed by pinko-dominant media and academia, even though they would find it highly insulting to spell it out to them like this.

After 3 years of relentless ideological warfare where government routinely foster animosity, envy, division, anxiety, by pitting one group against another, while totally neglecting ever-worsening economic situation, and finally capping it with trying to raise taxes across the board, many in softcore snapped and side against government and ruling party. This is the expression of pent-up anger against the government who refuse to listen and remain unyielding, and sanctimonious(pinko trait.)

Re #4

I forgot to include one group. If you see the second map, you notice yellow/green region on the S.W. part of S. Korea. These people worship former president Kim Dae-jung, the architect of appeasement policy, as a god. Since Kim Dae-jung is pro-North, they are unconditionally pro-North and, as a corollary, anti-American.

So, the "opposition" party is the one that's anti-North/appeasement and pro-American, then?

bump

Thank you for the post.

Hopefully after the next national election South Korea will work with the US as allies instead of acting like spoiled ungrateful teenage brats.

Fascinating dynamic, and many thanks for posting. One wonders what the effect of a possible minority for its allies will do for a North Korea who has been making them dance all this time.

1. Are the teachers unionized?
2. Do the professors have tenure?
3. If the answer to 1 or 2 is "yes," then does the opposition have chutzpah? :-)

You help make the FreeRepublic one of the best informed groups on the issues of China and South Korea. If the LameStreamMedia had 1/10th of what you provide, the American people would be so much better informed. Thanks for all your contributions.

Re #12

Ans to 1,2: Yes. Especially, there is a nasty pro-North teacher's union called "Chon-kyo-jo" whose member does frequent teach-ins for pro-North and anti-American stuffs. They are real problems.

Ans to 3: There are some movements to set up a teacher's union countering Chon-kyo-jo. In college campus, people on our side try to grow backbone and get vocal.
