MICHELLE SHEPHARD AND STAN JOSEY
STAFF REPORTERS

Police from across the GTA, led by the RCMP's anti-terrorism task force, swooped down on as many as 12 locations Friday night to arrest members of what is being described as a homegrown terrorist cell. Police remained tight-lipped about the massive operation, but have scheduled a news conference for 10 a.m. Saturday.

RICK MADONIK/TORONTO STAR
A joint forces operation brings terrorism suspects for processing at the Durham Regional Police station at Kingston and Brock roads in Pickering on Friday evening.

Shortly after the first arrests the suspects were driven to a heavily-guarded Pickering police station.

The station, on Brock Rd. in Pickering, was surrounded by a heavy ring of police security. A long line of unmarked police cars with suspects sat inside the security perimeter. About every 15 minutes or so another car would be admitted to the station's underground parking garage, where suspects entered the station for processing.

Heavily-armed members of the Durham region tactical unit were stationed at one-metre intervals around the station. Dozens of plainclothes officers, and uniformed RCMP, Durham and Toronto police were involved in the processing.

According to the Star's sources, the Canadian spy service CSIS has been monitoring the group since 2004, and an RCMP criminal investigation was launched last year.

Police have not said why they acted Friday night, and would not say how well-organized the group is, or whether it is armed.

“It is very serious,” a source who asked not to be named told Canadian Press. "These people had plans.”

While the intended target is unclear, the plan was to detonate an explosive device in Ontario, the source said.

“That’s the tool of choice for anybody who wants to cause damage.”

For full coverage, including the background of the group and how it came to police attention, see the Saturday Star and come back to thestar.com for updates throughout the day.

Canada is a complicated place. I once visited there quite often, but after my last visit in 2004 (to see plays at the Stratford Festival) was marred by unsubtle hostility. That felt like losing an old friend.

I'd like to have the "old friend" back.

"no, he is either of indoneasian/malaysian or philipino ethnicity, some mandarin chinese in him too."

I think it's the guy in the backseat of the car, not the oriental guy in the front seat, that is the terrorist. The one making a face.

The Mexican border is NOT about middle eastern insurgents its about Insurgents of another kind.. Middle eastern terrorists have the money to FLY into the U.S.(from Canada or ANYWHERE) if only for a "visit"(wink, wink).. They don't NEED to sneak in..

Do not deceive yourself. The primary difference between Canadian and Mexican policy is when the money is collected. Granted, Mexico has a crap economy. I have not seen a published statement from either government stating that they would secure THEIR side of the border. So it is a crapshoot as to which one will say "sorry, but the US brought it upon themselves again". My opinion is that Mexico is the most corrupt, and the greatest threat. But you can never be too sure....

Sorry, but you will never entice me into undermining the elected government of the United States. Now if you have a solid plan for the US military overthrowing Mexico in a three week timeframe, I am all ears. I will not say anything about Canada, because they freak out. Their parliament would vote to allow shar'ia, but the good people might see things differently.

Sorry to hear that.

There are anti-American idiots in Canada, it's true. Especially in the big cities (Toronto, Vancouver). But I think you'll find that most Canadians, particularly outside of the big cities are pretty fond of the States. And to be fair, there are anti-American idiots in the States too (Michael Moore, I'm looking at you).

"Their parliament would vote to allow shar'ia..."

The extent of your ignorance regarding Canada is breathtaking. And revealed more and more with each further asinine comment you make.

Cut your losses now,bud.

And open your mind.

I have been covering, ( Or, as Seamole calls it...-backhoe's pseudoblog--... ) psuedo-blogging, for years, a couple of the elements in WWIV ( III being the Cold War ), in which we find ourselves engaged.

The first element?

Islam, a Religion of Peace®? ( links, blogs, quips, quotes, aggravating pictures ) is located here- click the Pic, and scroll backwards:

Does that "salute" remind you of the "followers of the broken cross?" It should...

The other, somewhat interlocking element is this one:

"Thunder on the Border," click the picture:

What is happening under the radar is that the alien lobby, certain elements of radical Islam, and some on the Left share common goals, tactics, and exploitations of our system and society.

Work backwards on my links to see all the shady left-wing and terrorist-enabling organizations backing this rubbish.

Absolutely true. Ontario province isn't Alberta--I know people in both places. I lived close to the border for 10 years and watched a lot of Canadian tv (& news). I just didn't appreciate Michael Moore being held up as an example of a deep thinker over breakfast.

A swat team of terrorist sympathizers consisting of pro-bono lawyers from the People's University of Michigan (the Harvard of the mid west don't you know), the ACLU, Joe and Valerie Plame, and the democrat party led by Admiral Kerry and General Murtha is on its way to the defense of these innocent victims of government oppression.

Good call, I think. While there are far more Filipinos in Canada and especially Toronto area, I lean to Indonesian.

By gosh, of course you are right. Perps would not be in the front seat.

Mexico has a crap economy

Not so. Mexico is a wealthy country. It is ranked tenth in the woeld (CIA Factbook) according to GDP. It's just that the wealth is held by the European Mexicans and the Amerindians don't have squat.
