Snow: Flow of illegals not an 'invasion'

Spokesman says Article 4 of Constitution doesn't apply to border issue

Saying Mexico is "not the enemy," presidential press secretary Tony Snow today rejected the characterization of the constant flow of illegal aliens over the U.S. border as an "invasion."

At today's White House press briefing, WND asked the spokesman: "Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution says, 'The United States shall guarantee to every state in the Union a republican form of government and shall protect each of them from foreign invasion.' My question is, does the president believe this foreign invasion means only armed invasion, or doesn't this also mean the invasion of millions of illegal immigrants?"

Responded Snow: "I think what you are doing is you're attaching a martial connotation to something that does not have martial consequences. …

"What the president has said – if you were talking about an invasion, he's made it clear that Mexico is not the enemy."

WND also asked Snow about a lawsuit by war veteran Sgt. Peter Damon, who lost both of his arms in Iraq. Damon has sued Michael Moore for using clips without his permission in "Fahrenheit 9/11" to give the false impression that he opposed the war.

"I didn't lose my arms over there to come back and be used as ammunition against my commander in chief," Damon was quoted as saying.

"If he is asked," queried WND, "will this commander in chief be willing to testify in court on behalf of this double amputee sergeant?"

Snow called it a "hypothetical question"

"Please don't put me in the position of trying to answer to a lawsuit between somebody who served his country and Michael Moore," Snow said. "We'll let them deal with it."

"The problem is in the word "we." Certain business interests in the US have have subverted the enforcement of law by buying our politicians. In our CA Central Coast valley those business interests that use illegals for cheap labor are largely foreign owned--Japan, Holland, etc."

Us here, are not the problem. But WE the people are.
WE let this problem as Americans get out of control.
Can we honestly blame Mexico? When we never said no to them with any real meaning did we, a few hundred border partrol and checkpoints was it. We really said yes with every single other form of communication. YES work for us, YES we wont throw you out, YES get healthcare, YES have your kids here, YES we will educate them, YES YES YES.
And with news from the Busby campaign today, YES participate in our elections.

WE did this to ourselves.
And we cant just blame liberalism this time either.

At that time, he was already in the "this invasion is not an invasion;....camp

Looks to me like he's in the "this invasion is not a martial invasion" camp.

I guess if you define invasion to include shovels and rakes then we are being invaded. This is not a rational argument.

These people are coming here for work for us not overthrow us. It is called supply and demand or the free market, let it work.

The answer to my query was a simple 'No' not obfuscation through ifs, ands or buts.

You apparently excuse the border jumpers law breaking culpability by blaming America first. That may be your bag but I see it differently. Unless the employer is responsible for transporting the illegals into the country, which happens, then the law breaking starts with the border jumper. It is an act of voluntary law breaking.

But most of us are not supremely dishonest business owners. We did not anticipate the extent of the underhanded practices of American businesses, who will even pay the coyotes to bring the illegals into the U.S.

I say, after sealing the border, nail the employers who hire and have hired illegals and nail them hard. I won't take responsibility for their law-breaking ways, but I would like to see them punished.

Also, 12 years ago in California we the people passed a piece of legislation called Prop. 187. MALDEF filed suit against and a liberal judge ruled in their favor; however, the state's appeal had a good chance of winning but was left to linger until DUMBDonk Gray Davis became Governor and dropped the appeal.

Here is the story as told by California Coalition for Immigration Reform: History of Proposition 187

Similarly, our government is caving in to lawsuits and threats of lawsuits by the ACLU re the border, and Mexico's threats of resorting to "international law." In that case, blame spineless politicians.

We the people, instead of being to blame, are truly the court of last resort and the only hope for resolving the illegal INVASION.

most of the goths, huns, vandals who came into the Roman provinces between 300ad and 470ad came to work for the Roman tax-farmers and border units, not to directly conquer them.

and how did THAT turn out, hrmn?

well, he got rather upset when I brought up the completely analogous decline of the Roman provinces, so he might just be disingenuous when he claims the current -ah!- "demographic flow" "does not have martial consequences"

"You won't know what kind of problem you have until you try to stop it!"

They are absolutely right!! Every time officials step up enforcement in an area of smuggling, violence erupts. That is when you hear about smugglers ramming BP vehicles, Mexican army protecting smugglers, and gun battles. If we make a serious attempt to secure the entire border, it will lead to much violence. Those who live on the border know this, but those who don't, including most politicians will be stunned at what will happen if we really secure the border. We have to secure the border now, no matter what it takes, it will not get easier if we continue to ignore the problem or make a half-baked effort.

Don't think that I completely disagree with what you said but my post reflects my opinion on the issue when boiled down to its essence. At its most basic component of responsibility, without regard for 'root causes' and the like.

I do blame America first on this because we should know better. Mexico will never stop it. They benefit too much.
Its our fault for making this problem what it is today.

I dont excuse the illegals of anything. But when crimes are committed and nobody does anything about it for decades. Who is more to blame? Good people did nothing. Im talking conservatives values, Take responsibility for the problem ourselves. We never did. We never did what was necessary decades ago to avert this problem today.

I'm sorry but IMO your explanation is akin to blaming ourselves for every robbery or murder because we haven't hired more cops.
