National security no longer a clear winner for the GOP

Majority in polls puts at least as much faith in Democrats to protect the country.

by James Rosen -- Bee Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- For the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, national security is no longer President Bush's trump card.

With violence grinding on in Iraq, a majority of Americans have been telling pollsters in recent weeks that they trust Democrats as much or more than Bush or his Republican allies in Congress to protect the country, combat terrorism and run a sound foreign policy.

"The advantage the president has had on national security is either much smaller now or is perhaps gone," said pollster Scott Rasmussen. "What has been new in the last few months is a decline in support among the Republican base. Republicans are beginning to have doubts about the connection between Iraq and the larger war on terror. And they are less confident that we are doing well in the war on terror."

Bush's problems with Iraq and other national security issues have contributed mightily to the drop in his overall approval ratings, which have fallen into the low 30s.

Influential GOP political consultants agree that the turmoil in Iraq is by far the main reason for Bush's drop-off on national security. Beyond Iraq, they cite the current immigration debate and Bush's decision in February to allow Dubai Ports World, a United Arab Emirates firm, to manage six U.S. ports.

"The Dubai Ports controversy was the tipping point," said Scott Reed, a prominent consultant who managed Bob Dole's 1996 presidential campaign. "In that one instant, the country became skeptical about Bush's commitment to protecting our country. It also allowed his opponents to get to the right of him on the security issue. He's been unable to regain the high ground."

"Several analysts said a string of events has raised public doubts about the Bush administration's competence, starting with the government's poor response to Hurricane Katrina last summer.

Bill Greener, who is consulting six GOP incumbents and four Republican challengers in the November congressional elections, is unconvinced that Democrats can hold their gains on national security because he says they have not offered appealing alternatives for Iraq or other key issues.

But many Republican consultants acknowledge that their candidates are nervous.

"The president's numbers are in the tank across the board," said Charlie Black, an influential Republican consultant who talks regularly with party activists across the country. "The public is frustrated with Iraq, so they're just down on him about everything."

If his fellow Republicans are feeling edgy, Bush gives no indication that he will change course." .....

Hundreds of Dem operatives and media pundits are going to eat crow in November.

People need to watch what the democrats do, not what the media says they do.

Given Bush and the Senate's desire to turn this country over to Mexico, this isn't a big news flash. If Republicans would return to the tenets of conservatism, this would go away.

And the democrats would be even worse, no fence at all.

But third party would be better than either Dems or republicans. Unless republicans get with it soon on the border issue(it is not an immigrant issue, but a security issue and a rule of law issue)then they will be eating dirt in Nov.

The ports deals were certainly politically inept, but the lack of concern about protecting borders has to be a big hitter that the liberal MSM just doesn't want to feature.

Republicans have been in charge of all three branches of the federal government. How badly things have gone in Iraq and Katrina and the Dubai deal has been amplified and spun incredibly by both the MSM and the Democrats looking to profit from bad news. For example, the DEMs' position on Dubai and illegal immigration are purely opportunistic.

OK, that's where we are. The Democrats have to be made to take a stand on something. In my opinion, the Publicans shouldn't panic about this stuff. The economy is great, in part because of how well we've been doing against terrorism. The country took the War on Terror into Iraq. Long-term, that will probably prove to have been wise. Some can't be convinced of that, but plenty of people can understand when they're reminded of the whole picture.

Agreed! The MSM has been nothing but negative regarding the excellent economy and the good progress in Iraq.
Just a few good campaign ads will put the Dems on the defensive.

OPINION: Well, fuzzy, delusional propaganda with fuzzy, wishful little commentaries disguised as "news" just doesn't make it so.

Re: With violence grinding on in Iraq

I call B. S.

The Iraq military has been defeated.

The total number of Americans killed by the Iraq military for the past 3 years (2004, 2005, and 2006) is zero, zippo, null set, empty domain, none, 0.

In the privacy of the voting booth the "poll" will be different. The American people will NOT turn the safety of their families over to the rat. It really is THAT simple no matter how many ratmedia "polls" they trot out.

SOB

A Hurricane is not a Terrorist unless you consider Al Gore a threat to weather anomalies

Poor response came from all parties involved Including those who decided to stay behind

Borders is an issue but real Americans know if push comes to shove from mexico we will kick their asses with or without Government support thats why the GOP won't push issues on the border but it still does not explain why they won't bury the demoncrats once and for all !

I agree .. they always do this and then look very stupid when it doesn't happen. They seem to think that if they just talk about it happening .. it will happen .. talk about LA-LA land!

And .. these idiots BELIEVE THE FABRICATED POLLS FROM THE MEDIA. The media's using 11-14% advantage dems - thereby skewing the polls badly .. but the dimwits on the left are believing the numbers .. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID IN 2004.
