Only hours after Iraqi civilians were killed, a second team of Marines was sent in to take the victims' bodies to a local morgue.
Lance Corp. Ryan Briones was among the Marines sent in to recover the bodies, and he told the Los Angeles Times he is still haunted by what he saw, including a young girl who was shot in the head.
"[The victims] ranged from little babies to adult males and females," Briones told the newspaper. "I can still smell the blood."
Briones says he and another Marine were told to photograph the bodies. Military officials say those photos which they say show people shot at close range in the head and chest clearly contradict initial reports that the civilians were killed by a roadside bomb.

Why do you insist on condeming these Marines, we haven't even heard their testimony......if they are guilty they will be punished, until then they are innocent...
You're blind, my friend. That something like this could occur must be too horrible for you to even consider.
I can understand.
An excellent post, Crusader, and very good points.
Bingo. Let the USMC sort this out. They'll crucify the Marines if it proves true that they killed intentionally or recklessly killed civilians. If, however, no civilians were killed at all, or the circumstances somehow mitigate, then they shouldn't be hung out to dry.
Unlike some FReepers, however, I do not believe these reports are inherently unpatriotic. If Marines are slaughtering civilians, as an American who supports the troops as long as they fight justly, I damn well want to know about this. I will protest the sword if it isn't wielded well.
When accusations are made, the "media" and the politicians begin to apply steady pressure on the chain of command and demand that some "heads roll." The chain of command don't want it to be their heads and start looking for scapegoats. The facts of what actually happened become irrelevant. The politicians and the "media" must be fed the blood they want before they will shut up and go away.
God Bless You mystery-ak, Mike and family. Without families like yours, we would not be here
Much love and respect
Mike
He leaves in June. We had a family farewell party for him yesterday since he won't have anymore time off.....
"Frankly, if I were fighting in this war, with all the ridiculous 'engagement' constraints and with every battle fought under the microscope of the anti-American media, I might be more afraid to pull the trigger than not to."
Murtha's legacy to the troops on the ground.
Few? There are many posting here at, not just a few. They disgust me just as much as Murtha and the drive bys.
I'll point out that Marli is already history. I expect that was a brand new account with no posts to it, perhaps even from a known IP.
BINGO, not to mention lemmings who cling to every negative word about the very people protecting these lemmings
I can't tell you how much your prayers are appreciated....thank you
Either Pace is lying, or somebody in Iraq is lying. Briones said he turned his camera over to his commanders, and that's the last ever saw of it.
You, too, cannot comprehend that something this terrible could happen.
There's simply too many hints by those who do know to the contrary.
But why is it so hard for you to consider that this is a successful 'setup' by the jihadis? They know they cannot win on the battlefield. Breaking our will is all they have. They've tried it before. Remember the 'massacre' in the mosque earlier this very year?
My stepson was in Iraq during the initial invasion; at the time we were all worried about WMD and we didn't sleep for months. We were often able to e-mail him in "real time" during his hours and gave him so much information his buddies called us their "Daily Intel Briefing".
E-mail makes it easier for families to stay in touch, but I know the situation now is worrisome in ways we did not consider back in 2003. You know that your friends on FR will be praying for your son's safe return and if at some other time you wish us to send him letters from home, please let us know.
sinkspur you have said "May", "if" and now "Could" on this as part of your assumption that "this was calculated" and I'm the blind one?
Good God sinkspur, you're pathetic, those Marines deserve better than you
The only charges that have been made so far are not legal ones.
I don't believe anything that comes from the Fifth Column media, period
I'd like to know who ordered pictures be taken and how that points to a "cover-up."
Maybe Murtha jumped to conslusions in the Democrat effort to try to slam Bush again?
