[history]
WASHINGTON - President Bush, marking Memorial Day with a speech paying tribute to fighting men and women lost in war, signed into law Monday a bill that keeps demonstrators from disrupting military funerals......
...... Monday's observance at Arlington National Cemetery was not a funeral, so demonstrators were free to speak their minds at the site.
And several did.
Approximately 10 people from the Washington, D.C., chapter of FreeRepublic.com, a self-styled grass roots conservative group, held signs at the entrance of the cemetery supporting U.S. troops. A large sign held by several people said, "God bless our troops, defenders of freedom, American heroes."

Shouldn't it read "Legislation Bans Funeral Protests"? Mr Bush didn't issue a royal edict here.

About time something was done at the national level to put the Phelps gang in their place. The very fact that those people are still walking around demonstrates the restraint of the grieving families that they harassed.

Isn't this a bit ironic; that the reason this law had to be created was because of some 'alleged' American Christians, not Muslim extremists. I'm amazed that a church can proclaim itself Christian, yet do what they did. These 'Christians' do not even comprehend the most basic precepts that Christ taught.

Phelps charged that Congress was "blatantly violating" his First Amendment rights For a supposed Christian, that man has no morals or decency.

Seeing how the Always Squealing continually scream at Bush wherever anything is not done 100% to their satifisfaction, I think it only fair the same Screamers give Bush credit when ever things are done right. After all you never Remember Congress's roll in our Govt when BITCHING about something, why the sudden need to deny Bush CREDIT?

That should be asked of the headline editor at Yahoo or AP.

From the same article:
Approximately 10 people from the Washington, D.C., chapter of FreeRepublic.com, a self-styled grass roots conservative group, held signs at the entrance of the cemetery supporting U.S. troops. A large sign held by several people said, "God bless our troops, defenders of freedom, American heroes."
And
The FreeRepublic.com group was trying to counter demonstrations by the Kansas-based group, led by the Rev. Fred Phelps.
Nice job FReepers!!

I know we are going to hear howls from the usual suspects about "Free Speech" but I will merely point out you DO NOT get to scream "fire" in a theater, or yell "this is a hijack" on an airplane. The purpose of these sorts of protests in not dissent but to pick a fight. The people at the funeral have a right to NOT have their event disrupted by the deranged and self important. This is a good sound law.
Bush's Fault!

He's not a Christian. He's a cult.
Most MSM articles I have seen call this guy a Christian church, but he obviously is neither. Amazing how easy they do it, when they have so much trouble calling terrorists and rioters Moslem.

Shouldn't it read "Legislation Bans Funeral Protests"? Mr Bush didn't issue a royal edict here. I don't see anything in the new law that bans the protests. Limits on when and where you can protest have been around for decades. In many towns and cities across the country you need to get a permit to hold a protest march. And there are limits on when during the day they can be held.

As a PGR member I got to see the protestors in person,as i drove my I ignored them.
As we stood in line they were singing and shouting, trying to get attention, after less than an hour they left. It was cold windy and drizzly,so I guess they could not take it.

I agree.
This is lower than low to hurl hate at a grieving family.

Once again the Federal Government weighs in on a local matter when the matter could and should be dealt with on a local level. It is a shame that Congress lacks the testicular fortitude to deal with our immigration issues. Oh, I forgot Congress only handles symbolic issues and avoids controversial issues (with exception for increases in salary and benefits) so as to appear that they are concerned with security matters.
To: Hodar
Calling themselves Christians does make them a church anymore than hanging out in a McDonalds will cause you to become a hamburger.
They call themselves a church because they know it is harder to prosecute a 'church'. Also, the tax benefits are pretty handy.
These are the worst kind of inbred, lawyer scum. The Wiki actually has some good info on the 'church' and its' 'pastor'.

they (Phelps Groups) should have been corrected in a manner they wouldn't forget, and we wouldn't need a law on behavior like this

The purpose of these sorts of protests is not dissent but to pick a fight. Agreed, just as the typical burning of Old Glory on the courthouse steps after notifying the local media. Both are designed to incite, like shouting "fire" in a theatre.
