Memorial Day : History,Photos & Rememberance
Memorial Day History ^ | April 24, 2006 | David Merchant

" Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11,

and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery

The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war).

It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the "National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363)

It is not Important when Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all."

WOW! J.I. Colorado!

Now all I have to do too is get some more Great Graphics like you and everyone else has ! Kind of Overloaded with " Archives " and low on Graphics--The Mrs. Saw your post and said Big Thanks--( but she DOES get Back rubs out of the whole deal! Hahahaha!

Hey EXDEM!!

Welcome aboard!...being an "EX" and all.

Funny thing too--I think I found as many "EX" Dems here as I have regular BASE Conservatives!

Maybe in a way...because of the INTERNET and other Out-Side forces like Radio-News Mags--many DEMS who DO Share the very same Dedication to "AMERICAN " ideals like many of us here, and many who don't let themselves get pushed around and who DO "THINK" for themselves were able to recognize the BULL they had been hearing--and kind of --( with the STRENGTH that all REAL americans show of being able to THINK FOR THEMSELVES!) said--ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!

I don't knwo whether you were a " one Issue " or just " Faked - out - from - liberal - media - Overload " type of DEM ; but Thank You too for your thanks and for coming here too to support all others who Think for themsleves.

Darth Airborne

P.S.--To all VETS too-- " American Remebers D-Day !!!" and appreciates your sacrifices and those Sacrifices of your Friends & Familes who did NOT come back.

God Bless you all.

Airborn,

Such a great thread, the pictures are excellent, but the Best part was in learning what they meant. I never knew the meaning behind the Poppy, now I will never forget... Big Thank You to both you and your wife.

I do wish to tell you, that as a child my grandfather who was a WWII Veteran would bring me to the cemetery on Memorial Day to help place Flags on the Soldiers graves. The article on the Boy scouts reminded me of my Grandfather.

Thank God in an actual BIG ; way that you DID have a Patriotic Grandfather ExDem as you were growing up! : That you had a Great Living Example that you could inter-act with and speak directly with About the REAL History of America while you were growing up! ( instead of the circumstances today...)

Sounds like he himself had good, hard working and HONEST Parents too who recognized that living in a Free Country-and living in FREEDOM is NOT a "RIGHT" but more of a RESPONSIBILITY & that you have OBLIGATIONS that the " INNER-SELF" OF A HONEST, GOOD MAN! FEELS AND RECOGNIZES!!

And if HE Felt & Saw this- in times that were 10x's rougher then we live in today!- and STILL carried on with the trek to cemeteries for such an unselfish act as laying flowers or placing Flags in Honor of Those who had Sacrificed so HE may be alive and Free- Is he still alive ED?? Give him a strong, firm hand shake of Thanks from me!!

If he has passed away: weel..then I am sure that he was a Good Human Being too all around!!and The Good Lord has placed him along His side for his Good Heart & Conscious!

We NEED " Good Men " these days more then ever ExDem.

And I feel that those I meet HERE too are "Good"- in a sense they have that "Inner" quality that recognizes the Truth of situations INSIDE THEIR HEARTS first! BEFORE actual thoughts and explanations hit their brains.

Maybe that is what is called

Righteousness!

..or just knowing in your Heart there are things that HAVE to be DONE--and that YOU feel compelled that it is YOU who have to do it!!

OTHERWISE...you you feel that you may NOT be able to live with yourself!! And THAT FEELING Can NOT be faked!! ( That is why WE can spot LIES IMMEDIATELY and Falsehoods of some as they Try to Pretend to have these altruistic Traits for their own SELFISH Agendas!!-Feeling like "PATRIOTISM" can never be FAKED!

But it sounds from some of your own pasts posts that this Grand Characteristic has been passed on down into you too ExDem! May it long Grow and be passed on to your own children too!

For your Grandfather:

Freedom Isn't Free

I watched the flag pass by one day,

It fluttered in the breeze;

A young Marine saluted it,

And then he stood at ease.

I looked at him in uniform,

So young, so tall, so proud;

With hair cut square and eyes alert,

He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought. how many men like him

Had fallen through the years?

How many died on foreign soil?

How many mothers' tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?

How many foxholes were there

That served as soldiers graves?

No . Freedom is not Free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,

When everything was still;

I listened to the bugler play,

And felt a sudden chill;

I wondered just how many times

That Taps had meant "Amen"

When a flag had draped a coffin

Of a brother or a friend;

I thought of all the children,

Of the mothers and the wives,

Of fathers, sons and husbands.

With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard

At the bottom of the sea,

Of unmarked graves in Arlington.

No. Freedom is not Free!
