The Tempest: A handful of skeptics maintain that Global Warming is a hoax
Washington Post ^ | May 28, 2006 | Joel Aschenbach

IT SHOULD BE GLORIOUS TO BE BILL GRAY, professor emeritus. He is often called the World's Most Famous Hurricane Expert. He's the guy who, every year, predicts the number of hurricanes that will form during the coming tropical storm season. He works on a country road leading into the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, in the atmospheric science department of Colorado State University. He's mentored dozens of scientists. By rights, Bill Gray should be in deep clover pausing only to collect the occasional lifetime achievement award.

He's a towering figure in his profession and in person. He's 6 feet 5 inches tall, handsome, with blue eyes and white hair combed straight back. He's still lanky, like the baseball player he used to be back at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington in the 1940s. When he wears a suit, a dark shirt and tinted sunglasses, you can imagine him as a casino owner or a Hollywood mogul. In a room jammed with scientists, you'd probably notice him first.

He's loud. His personality threatens to spill into the hallway and onto the chaparral. He can be very charming.

But he's also angry. He's outraged.

He recently had a public shouting match with one of his former students. It went on for 45 minutes.

He was supposed to debate another scientist at a weather conference, but the organizer found him to be too obstreperous, and disinvited him.

Much of his government funding has dried up. He has had to put his own money, more than $100,000, into keeping his research going. He feels intellectually abandoned. If none of his colleagues comes to his funeral, he says, that'll be evidence that he had the courage to say what they were afraid to admit.

Which is this: Global warming is a hoax.

why is Greenland called Greenland

Sorry, Greenland didn't used to be green or farmable.

Greenland was named by Eric the Red for the purpose of misleading, and possibly attracting, potential settlers. Greenland was warmer, by just a few degrees when Erik the Red landed there. An ice-cap covers the vast majority of this largest island in the world. People are pretty well restricted to the coasts, which is no picnic either. What we are calling Greenland is actually an independent country named Kalaalit Nunaat.

Now, guess why Iceland was named Iceland.

Global Warming: The Other Side of the Story
Capitalism Magazine ^ | May 19, 2006 | Tom DeWeese

The simple truth is there is no scientific consensus on Global Warming. In fact, as the media frenzy screams global warming, there are a growing number of scientists who are expressing their doubts. http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?id=50

"Bottom line: Global warming is NOT a hoax. That man's activities cause it or are making it greater IS a hoax and a lie."

Yup. We are warming because the Sun is producing more energy. Mars is warming, too, and it is not because of the hydrocarbons produced by Spirit and Opportunity. It is because there is more solar energy.

The belief that man is causing global warming is the 21st-century expression that man is the center of the universe. It is a way of empowering one's fe-e-e-lings that you are important.

Those that need to believe that man is the center of the universe (even its modern manifestation of Global Warming) will punish people that challenge dogma, much like Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for esposing the Copernican Theory. Similarly our weatherman will face a like professional fate unless he does an auto de fe.

Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that there is global warming. Here is the first sentence from an article, Sun's Output Increasing in Possible Trend Fueling Global Warming By Robert Roy Britt, Senior Science Writer posted: 02:30 pm ET 20 March 2003, on SPACE.com

"In what could be the simplest explanation for one component of global warming, a new study shows the Sun's radiation has increased by .05 percent per decade since the late 1970s."

I don't think global warming is a hoax. I also don't think its cause is necessarily based on human activities. For all our science, we can't really explain why we have an ice age that lasts a certain time, then we don't, then we do.

We're on a wobbling egg, and it's going to have temperature variances based upon that.

Sure, im interested to know what studies these are that contradict the bare data.

Bare data indeed. Fraud hustlers.

Crichton points out how the Goddard center pulled thier original dataset that went back 150 years after Crichton reproduced it in the reference section of State of Fear. They substituted a shorter data set because it props up their feeble arguements of global warming.

You can go shove your Bare Data.

And Mount Pinatubo spilled out how many times more greenhouse gases than man does in a year?

The US alone emits 1.7 billion tons of CO2 per year. Mount Pinatubo emitted 42 million tons.

You mean like this 150 year dataset: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/Fig.A2.txt, which is publically available?

Nice try - no the one that attempts a correlation of CO2 concentrations with surface temp changes.

The premise of those who subscribe to these things is that CO2 is the cause of a "accelerated" warming trend. Forget that your ilk were crying about cooling not all that long ago the data show a disconnect between co2 and warming undermining the hypothesis that CO2 was "causing" this acceleration.

Questioning this causality is grounds for losing one's grants and rejection of grant applications. There are a substantial number of researchers brave enough to go against the peer pressure and repeat the mantra of those who analyze data that "correlation is not necessarily causation.

But it looks like you bought it. Good for you, no need for a 401(k) huh?

So one that has nothing to do with what I was talking about.

The claim was made that warming stopped in 1998. I was responding to this claim as it seemed bizarre to me (I know that it is not true see). I pointed out that global temperature measurements (both the GISS and CRU datasets) do not support warming stopping in 1998.

Anyway I found the media article (not study as originally claimed) which was cited as saying warming stopped in 1998. They used the CRU data themselves, and it appears they were tongue in cheek when they claimed it shows warming stopped in 1998.

How your post relates to warming stopping in 1998 I do not know. If you think warming stopped in 1998 then we have something to discuss. If not then we don't.

Forget that your ilk

I wish I had an ilk, but I don't.

"In 20 years, he likes to say, the world will have cooled, and everyone will know he was right all along. When that happens, he says, he hopes someone will put flowers on his grave."

I would be happy to.

No it is only a handful of media hysterics who claim Global Warming is man made. The rest of us know Global Warming is happening as part of a perfectly natural ebb and flow of the Solar Sun Spot cycle combined with more accurate and far reaching methods of measurements.

Man made Global Warming is the only issue being kept before the people by a handful of rich self styled "Environmental saviors" for political reasons. The rest of us know better. That is why ratification of Kyoto got NO votes from the US Senate.

"BUT, post just one misspelled headline..."

Reminds me of one of Dad's favorite off-color jokes:

The other night I walked into a bar, got a beer and sat down in front of the window next to a guy who was crying. I figured I would try to cheer him up a little, so I asked him why he was crying.

He said, "Look out that window. Do you see all of those streets out there? I built them, all of them, with my bare hands. But do they call me 'BOB - The Street Builder?' no..."

"Now, look out that window. Do you see those docks, down on the river? I built them, all of them, with my bare hands. But do they call me 'BOB - The Dock Builder?' no..."

"And over there. Do you see that beautiful neighborhood? All those wonderful houses? I built those too. All of them, with my bare hands. But do they call me 'BOB - The Home Builder?' no...

"But you screw ONE goat..."

And...that was an excellent article. Thanks! My DH (who sees the Dark Cloud in every Silver Lining) does believe that man IS the cause of Global Warming. I am building a file refuting Global Warming propaganda...which he will either refuse to read or erase from my hard drive, LOL!

It is a baseless religion of sorts. I truly don't understand this, because my husband is otherwise VERY logical and, dare I add, BRILLIANT in math, physics, electronics, etc. He can take apart anything and put it back together again with no extra pieces, LOL! He is an avid lover of Nature; a Hunter, Conservationist, SCUBA diver, never hesitates to turn the compost pile for me, and is always designing a new and improved one. :) Where his 'Liberal Guilt' on this issue comes from is a mystery to this day. He grew up on a working dairy farm! If anyone knows the "rhythms" of Nature, it should be him, wouldn't you think? I mean, if you've ever milked a cow, it is a wonderfully relaxing experience. Lots of time to think things through while Bessie is filling the milkpail, LOL!

But when it comes to Global Warming he is an emotional girly-man. I cannot get through to him that it is NOT the fault of humans, that Mother Earth will do as she d@mn well pleases; always has, always will, that he needs to "follow the money" as far as research results go and that Earth has been heating up and cooling down for eons. Heck, ALL of our planets have climetalogical changes over the vast expanse of Time!

I adore him, but on some subjects, he's just plain nuts.

So again, thanks for the additional ammo. And from 'The Washington Compost' no less! ;)

I don't know what Dr. Gray's prediction record is, but the guy is widely respected, even by the guys at the NHC/TPC.

The oil and gas industry has invested millions of dollars into research on global warming. Why we would they do that? Clearly they are motivated by a desire to service the needs of humanity. Who would you believe Exxon or Algore?
