"We are conducting a peaceful action. We want to show that we have the same rights as other citizens," Alexeyev told a news conference a few hours before events turned violent.
The crowd opposed to gay rights and the rally included women who held up religious icons. They were joined by men in Cossack traditional dress — white sheepskin hats and black-and-red tunics.
Police quickly moved in as the first half-dozen rally participants arrived carrying flowers. They were joined by about 100 religious and nationalist extremists who kicked and punched some of the activists.
As Volker Beck, a Green member of Germany's national parliament, was giving a TV interview, about 20 nationalist youths surrounded him and punched him in his face, bloodying his nose.

Is it live and let live when those with the homosexual agenda come to my son's school and try to get their propaganda shoved down our throats? I have no problem with gays doing whatever they want to do behind closed doors. The problem I have is when they start trying to use the Government at all levels to brainwash my family. Or when they rely on a select few judges to short circuit the will of the electorate.
So, you're saying these gay guys in Russia have personally done all these things to you and yours and it is all right to beat them to bloody pulps because of that? Wouldn't it be more just to go after those folks specifically responsible for the injustices against you? Why do you lump all gay folks into the same basket?
No, I'm theorizing the Russians look at how homosexual agenda has come to dominate the West and have decided to stop it before it infects them as well. More power to 'em.
BTW--I don't like to see people getting roughed up any more than you do. But, compared to the long term damage society is/will suffer due to the homosexual agenda, a few black eyes and blood noses is inconsequential.
Outside of a bar, I've never encountered a problem that I could just punch away. In this case doing so would probably hurt more than it helps.
If that's the standard that we're going to go by, then one would think that Fred Phelps and his little crew of mutants would have been beaten to death by irate veterans long ago. But they haven't been, and we don't because we understand that the rule of law is more important than our hatred for Phelps.
What happened in Moscow was a crime, and however you feel about the gays, you know that that's the truth.
It's bad for the gays when that stuff happens, but it's worse for Russia.
Apparently it wasn't a crime in Russia. I didn't see any mention of any Cossack being arrested or charged with a crime. In fact, if you read the entire article you will see that it was the sodomite demonstrators who were breaking the law. The city authorities had refused to give them a permit to demonstrate, so their little look-at-ME-ME-ME-ME-ME routine was illegal to begin with.
OK, it wasn't the place of the Cossacks to enforce the law against demonstrating without permission. But the police had every right, a duty in fact, to enforce the law. And with force if necessary.
Dear God, I hope no one ever lumps you into some all-encompassing group and punishes you based on what your compatriates might do.
Might do? Gee, the gays have been shoving their lifestyle down everyone's throat. Or haven't you noticed? And it is doing damage--from AIDS to contributing to the declining birthrate in the West. And they want a repeat performance in Russia and elsewhere.
That's all I have to say on this subject.
Yes, and instead of deploying to prevent violence and restore order, the police joined in the melee. Bad for Russia.
They marched anyway. Their behavior was equivalent to raping 5 year old girls, and the public was outraged.
Frothing hyperbole. They were parading without a license and planning to lay flowers on the monument, not defecate on it. The last time I checked, in a democratic society that led to a ticket and perhaps the arrest of the organizers, not a stick to the face.
Apparently you are the proverbial frog in the boiling pot, and society has changed your values.
I don't think that my generation cares as much as our elders do about the gays.
And Fred Phelps uses Arlington in a much more offensive way for his, yet he's never suffered the same fate. Why is that?
Now you're stereotyping. SOME gays have been outspoken and pushy. That does not mean all of them need to be tarred with the same brush. SOME Christians blow up abortion clinics. That does not mean all Christians are bomb throwers, does it?
Don't tell me it isn't something to be concerned about.
Gay marriage is not merely a fraud and a farce. It is destructive of traditional marriage and will inflict incalculable damage on the society that permits it.
The proof is overwhelmingly evident in the nations that have embraced gay marriage. Those nations are on a fast track to extinction.
Don't tell the left this, but even the KPRF (Russian communists) were opposed to the gay march in Russia.
If the shoe was on the other foot they sure wouldn't hesitate to deprive others of their rights:
=Yes, and instead of deploying to prevent violence and restore order, the police joined in the melee. Bad for Russia.=
Actually the police arrested several gay leaders and more than 50 anti-paraders. Without police's defence gays'd be torn to pieces.
=They were parading without a license and planning to lay flowers on the monument, not defecate on it.=
Anybody can lay flowers on the monument but when they announce the procedure via mass-media it turns to parade. The parade was banned. Period.
