The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.
The new findings ''were against our expectations,'' said Donald Tashkin, of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.
''We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use,'' he said. ``What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.''
Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin's previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Tashkin said that while he still believes marijuana is potentially harmful, its cancer-causing effects appear to be of less concern than previously thought.

It may not cause cancer but it makes a lot of people permanently stupid in my opinion.

So, marijuana is the only smoke in the world that won't cause lung cancer. BTW, I have some swamp land for sale.

Oh, and you forgot. You can get lung cancer from secondhand tobacco smoke from a distance of roughly 28 miles, but you can't get it from weed directly inhaled and held in the lungs.....makes perfect sense to me.

Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin's previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Ridiculous strategy.
The problem with marijuana has never been "fear of cancer". I don't care if it does or does not. Marijuana hurts a person's chances to develop into a fully functioning member of society. As another poster said, it just makes you stupid.

This study was flawed in that it excluded people over 60. Most cigarette smokers start dying from lung cancer after age 60.

I don't do drugs. The most I even drink is when I have two glasses of pinot grigio with Salmon Gorgonzola on Saturday night.

The pot makes the cancer cells so lazy they can't multiply. I know that's humor, but it's pretty close to what the author of the study said.
